The study was conducted at the experimental field of Vegetable Division, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur in the summer season of 2014. Fourteen hybrids of summer tomato and their parents were included in this study to estimate heterosis relative to mid parent and heterobeltiosis, and select better hybrids. Both positive and negative heterosis was observed for different quantitative and qualitative characters of summer tomato. Four hybrids S12Hybrid-42, 43, 44 and 47 out of 14 exhibited significant positive heterosis relative to mid parent for marketable fruits per plant (MFT/pl) (77.1*, 90.5*, 166.8** and 140.9** % respectively), marketable yield per plant (MY/pl) (77.4*, 99.4*, 134.7**and 105.3*% respectively) and marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha) (75*, 97*, 130**and 100.3* % respectively). Similarly S12Hybrid 43 showed significant positive heterobeltiosis for MFt/pl (60.6* %), MY/pl (71.8*%) and MY/ha (72.2*%) while two hybrids S12Hybrid 44 and 47 exhibited outstanding significant positive heterobeltiosis for fruits per cluster (Ft/cl) (34.6* and 51.9** % respectively), MFt/pl (157.5** and 91.5**% respectively), MY/pl (106.8** and 96.7*% respectively) and MY/ ha (106.9** and 96.9* % respectively). Based on the characters studied for mid parent heterosis and heterobeltiosis, visual looking of fruit and plant health at least three hybrids S12Hybrid 43, 44 and 47 were found promising for utilizing in the summer hybrid tomato variety development program in future.

To estimate heterosis relative to mid parent and heterobeltiosis and  to select better hybrids.

The study consisted of 14 hybrids of tomato. Eight lines were used as female and three lines as male to produce these hybrids. Some of the parents used in producing these hybrids were reported as good combiner for different quantitative and qualitative characters in the past. It was conducted at the experimental field of Vegetable Division, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur in the summer season of 2014. Seeds were sown in seed bed on May 21, 2014. Forty three days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on July 03, 2014 under transparent poly tunnels. Poly tunnels were 2.3 meter wide having two 1.0 meter wide beds with 30 cm drain in between. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with two replications. Plant spacing maintained 60 cm between rows and 40 cm between the plants within the row within the bed. Land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 5000, 248, 88, 123, 21, 4.9 and 1.7 kg/ha respectively. Half of the cow dung; entire quantity of P, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd of K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining amount of cow dung was applied in pit as basal and K in two equal installments as split at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. The entire urea was applied in three equal installments as top dressing at 15, 30 and 45 days of transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. Measured characters and statistical analysis: We measured 10 characters which include days to 50% flowering (D50%F), duration of fruit harvest (DH), flower per cluster (Fl/cl), fruit per cluster (Ft/cl), marketable fruits per plant (MFt/Pl), marketable yield per plant (MY/l), average fruit weight (AvFtwt), marketable yield per hectare (MY/ha), per cent total soluble (TSS) and locule per fruit (Loc/ft). The mean square of error was estimated to use in significance test of heterosis of hybrids for different characters through one-way ANOVA in MINITAB statistical software (version 15, Minitab Inc, State College, Pennsylvania, USA). Heterosis was recorded as mid parent heterosis (Hm) and better parent heterosis (Hb) form mean values according to the formula adopted by Falconar and Mackay (1996), and was estimated following Mather and Jink (1971). Student’s t-test was used to test the significant (P<0.01 and <0.05) differences of F1 mean over mid and better parent (Singh and Chaudhary, 2006).

Both positive and negative heterosis relative to mid parent (MP) and better parent was observed for different quantitative and qualitative characters of summer tomato. Three hybrids S12Hybrid 43, 44 and 47 showed desirable level of positive and significant heterosis for major yield contributing characters (Ft/cl, MFt/pl, MY/pl and MY/ha). Based on the characters studied for MP heterosis and heterobeltiosis, visual looking of fruit and plant health, these three hybrids may be selected for testing in regional yield trials.
