Population Dynamics of Menochilus Sexmaculatus (fab.) in Different Vegetable Fields and Its Predation Efficiency on Aphis Gossypii (gl.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted to determine the population abundance of the coccinelIid beetle predator, Menochilus sexmeculatus in association with aphids in bean, brinjal and cabbage fields and assess the predation efficiency on brinjal aphid, Aphis gossypii. M. sexmaculatus was more abundant in the bean field than in brinjal and cabbage. Its number averaged 0.4. 0.7, 4.6, and 3.9 respectively on leaf, stem, inflorescence, and pod per 0.37 m² of bean plant. The mean number of the predator was 0.3-1.3 per brinjal and cabbage plant. The predator consumed 12-22 and 13-27 brinjal aphids at medium and high density, the adult eating more than the larva in 12 hours of predator-prey association.

Objectives:

To the population dynamics of the predator, M. sexmsculetus occurring in aphid infested vegetable crops and the efficiency of this predator on brinjal aphid, Aphis gossypii.

Methodology:

The population estimation of M. sexmaculatus Was carried out in the campus and farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during winter season (1988) in bean, brinjal and cabbage fields infested by aphids. For population estimation on bean plant, four random samples were taken from each of four study sites, the area of a sample being 0.37 m². The number of aphids, Aphis medicaginis K. and predator M. sexmaculetus were counted on bean leaves, stems, inflorescence and fruits separately. The sampling was carried out on one occasion. The population of the predator and prey (Aphis gossypii) was enumerated in the brinjal and cabbage field, counting their numbers on the leaves of four randomly selected plants. The sampling was made in the same plant on four occasions at weekly intervals. In the laboratory, six brinjal plants were grown in pot and artificially infested with brinjal aphid, A. gossypii. Three plants were used for larval predator (final instar) and three for adult beetle predator. Three aphid-prey population densities categorized as high, medium and Iow on leaves 1. 2 and 3 of each plant comprising 126-157. 60-102 and 45-90 aphids respectively for larval predator and 150-275, 70-115 and 50-84 aphids respectively for adult predator were considered. Two groups of predators comprising 10 and 5 individuals from each of larva and beetle were released on the high and medium prey densities respectively. The low prey-density was kept as control i e. without predator. Each leaf of the predation test of the beetle predator was caged with mosquito net and for the larval predators was lined with vaseline around the petiole. The number of predators and surviving preys were counted in all these three treatments 12 hours after the release of the predator.
