Variety and Species
Twenty four selected top yielding local and exotic hybrids cultivated in the country viz. Pacific 11, Pacific 60, Pacific 747, Pacific 759, Pacific 984, NK 40, NK 46, 900 M, 900 M Gold, Pinacale, Wang 11, Shampan, Pioneer V 92, BARI hybrid maize 7, BARI hybrid maize 9, Prince, Uttaron 2, Arun 2, Arun 4, Deuti, 962, 827 K, 717 K and 7001 K were used for this study. The balanced bulk seeds (150 ears each) of selected two sets of fourth cycle seeds were grown separately in isolation and were allowed for random mating. Seeds were sown on 26 November, 2012 at BARI, Joydebpur. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40, 5 and 1 kg/ha of N, P2O5, K2O, S, Zn and B, respectively and standard agronomic practices were followed to raise good crop. During plant growth any undesirable character or weak plant was rouged out whenever seen. Important characters for rouging were too week and too tall. Traits like high ear height, exposed cob, leafy cob etc. were avoided. At flowering time, considering the both objective, i) medium height and high yield goal and ii) early and dwarfness (medium height) about 250 plants were selected and tagged them properly with green and yellow colored tag separately. At maturity, the two colored tag plants ear were harvested and kept separately. During processing and post harvest selection, only good looking and comparatively big cobs with attractive grain color were preferred. Finally, selection were done based on two main objectives (i) medium height and high yield goal and (ii) earliness and medium stature, two groups of ears were separated and stored for next cycle selection. This random mating and selection for desirable characters and discarding undesirable plants will be continued up to 5th cycles to accumulate favorable genes. After improving the base material a part of the population would be used for development of elite inbred lines following rapid inbred development method.
