Evaluation of Pest Tolerance of the Crossed Genotypes of Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at cotton Research Center Rangpur during the season 2011- 2012. One back crossed genotypes, four introduced lines and one local control were included in this experiment.The tested heterozygous genotypes showed significant different in all yield attributing traits except node number of first fruiting branches per plant Except BC₅ and CB-10 all other genotypes showed tolerance to American boll warm but susceptible to sucking pest.

Objectives:

To Evaluate Pest Tolerance of the Crossed Genotypes of Cotton.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur during the seas son 2011-2012. One back crossed genotypes BCs, four introduce lines PA-1,PA-2,CT- 042,CT-043 and one local control CB-10 were included in this experiment. The above four introduced lines supplied by CDB and Lal - Teer Company. We want to know the introduced 4 (four) lines are tolerant to pest or not. After that transfer of pest resistant gene to the adapted varieties was the main object. Now test of tergate pest tolerance was the main object of the present experiment. Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications was followed. The soil type of the trial plot was sandy loam with medium fertility. The unit plot size was 10m X 3.6m (4 rows). Each entry was sown four rows in each plot. Plant to plant distance was 0.45m. Water soaked and asataf treated two or three seeds were sown per hole during sowing time but at the final thinning (after 21 days of seed emergence) one seedling per stand were allowed. Green manuring (sun-hemp) was done and decomposed organic matter was applied before final land preparation at the rate of 500 cft /ha. The nutrient elements such as Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) , Boron (B), and Magnesium (MgS04) were applied in the row at the rate of 6.45-16-11-5-0.92 and 5.4 kg/ha respectively as basal dose. At the 1^st side dressing the nutrient elements such as Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K) and Zn were applied at the rate of 9.6-15 and 1.94 kg/ha at the seedling age of 25 DAE one side of the cotton row. After 42 DAB the second side dressing was applied at the rate of 24.19-12.00-27.5-5.76- 1.22 kg/ha Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) and Boron (B) respectively in opposite side of the 1^st side dressing. When the plants appeared at 62 days third side dressing was done at the rate of 24.19-12.00-33.00-5.03-0.925kg/ha of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) and, Boron (B)respectively opposite side of the 2nd side dressing. The last or fourth side dressing was done at the plant age of 75 days at the rate of Nitrogen 16.13 kg and potassium (K) 22 kg /ha respectively. Two weeding were done. Three times mulching between the rows were done by power tiller. Two times irrigation that is at the third week of November and the 1 st week of December were given due to drought situation. After 33 days of sowing, first spray of chloropyriphose was applied against sucking pests such as Jassid and Aphid etc. Presence of Chewing and sucking pest were monitored in regular interval and scouting based spray was followed. Artificial inoculation of american boll warm larvae were done in the tested plant which were grown in the tub (Restricted environment).The pest data was also collected from the experimental plot and analyzed through MSTAT-C program.

Achievement/Findings:

Four introduced genotypes showed chewing pest tolerance and have high yield potentiality. The treatment PA-2 and CT-043 should be selected for cultivation due to high yield ability and pest tolerance. These four introduced genotypes should exploit for pest tolerant and high yielding cotton variety development.
