The Phosphate Potential and Phosphate Concentration in Some Acid Soils of East Pakistan in Relation to the Uptake of Phosphate by Aus Paddy

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objective of the study was to study the relationship of phosphate potential and uptake of phosphorus by rice plants. A green house experiment was conducted with five different soils from Tejgaon, Masimpur, Qurmitala, Demra and Azampur in the district of Dacca. A total of nine treatments for each soil were included in this experiment. Each treatment was replicated thrice and arranged in a randomized block design. Phosphorus application alone or with lime increased the uptake of phosphorus by rice plants growing on all the soils. Liming also resulted in increased uptake. Significant correlations were obtained between phosphate potential and phosphate uptake by rice plants growing on all soils. No significant correlations were obtained between chemically extractable phosphorus and phosphorus uptake except in two cases. Therefore, it was concluded that phosphorus uptake by aus paddy growing on the acid soils was governed by phosphate potentials of the soils and not by concentration of the phosphorus extracted by chemical extractants. The availability of phosphate in acid soils may be better estimated from phosphate potential of the soils.

Objectives:

To study the relationship of phosphate potential and uptake of phosphorus by rice plants.

Methodology:

A green house experiment was conducted with five different soils from Tejgaon, Masimpur, Qurmitala, Demra and Azampur in the district of Dacca. A total of nine treatments for each soil were included in this experiment. Each treatment was replicated thrice and arranged in a randomized block design. The phosphatic fertilizers and lime were added one month prior to transplanting to attain stability in soil pH. Basal doses of nitrogen and potassium were added to all the pots at the rate of 30 Ibs. per acre of nitrogen and 45 Ibs. per acre of K₂0 respectively. Three rice seedlings were transplanted on each pot. Plants were harvested when they were 85 days old. At the same time, soil samples were also collected from each pot. Three chemical extractants used were 0.01 M CaCl, Aslyng (1964), N/500 H₂S0₄ (Truog, 1930) and .03N NH₄F in .025N HCl (Bray & Kurtz, 1945) for the determination of phosphorus in soils.
