Regional Yield Trial of Selected Summer Tomato Hybrids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three selected summer hybrids along with BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 and BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 were tested at Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the summer season of 2014 with a view to develop summer hybrid tomato variety(s). The hybrid CLN 3150-A-5 x 3125-0-19 had the highest individual fruit weight (86.1 g). The variety BARI Hybrid Tomato-4 produced the highest number of fruits per plant (30.4). The selected hybrid produced around 25- 28 fruits per plant. The highest fruit yield was recorded (2. 35 kg/ plant) in the CLN 3324A xCLN3241AA which was closely followed by the hybrid CLN 3150-A-5 x 3125-0-19 (2.20 kg/plant). The virus infection recorded at 30-45 days after planting around 10% in the selected hybrid where as more than 50 percent plants infected in BARI Hybrid Tomato 4.

Objectives:

To evaluate the potentiality of the F1 tomato lines for cultivation in summer at different location.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the summer season of 2014. The seeds of the three F1 tomato lines along with BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 and BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 were sown in the seedbed on May 5, 2014. Seedlings were transplanted in the main field on June 7, 2014. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.8 x 1.0 m accommodating 24 plants in each plot having 60 x 40 cm plant spacing. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MP 250kg per ha. Half of the quantity of cowdung, entire TSP and half of the MP were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MP and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. The crop was protected from rain providing polythene tunnel. Irrigation, pruning, mulching weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on some yield and yield contributing characters. The compiled data were subjected to statistical analysis for interpretation of results.

Results clearly indicated that the summer hybrid tomato lines had the genetic potentiality to produce fruit bigger than the earlier although number of fruits is less. The lowest individual fruit weight was recorded from BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 (55.8g) while it was the highest for the hybrid CLN 3150-A-5 x 3125-0-19 (86.1g). The other two hybrids also had the bigger fruits than the control variety BARI Hybrid Tomato 4. The highest number of fruits per plant (30.4) and corresponding the lowest fruit yield (1.7 kg/plant) was recorded from the hybrid BARI Hybrid Tomato 4. Although the numbers of fruits were higher but the smaller size fruits and virus infection made the lowest yield. However, the biggest sized fruits producing line CLN 3324A xCLN3241AA yielded the maximum amount of fruits (2.35 kg /plant) followed by the line CLN 3150-A-5 x 3125-0-19 (2.20 kg). Moreover, these lines possessed longer duration (109 days) is added advantage where previous varieties duration around 65 days.
