Reclamation of Kosh Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of the study was to to test the efficiency of lime and manganese dioxide in increasing the pH value of flooded acid sulphate soil and to interpret the reactions in terms of chemical and physicochemical changes in soil. An experiment was set up in a completely randomized design under submerged condition in the Green House of the Department of Soil Science, Dacca University with the following treatments: (1) Control, (2) Leaching with distilled water (3) 0.4% calcium carbonate, (4) 0.8% calcium carbonate, (5) 0.4% calcium carbonate + 1% manganese dioxide, (6) 0.8% calcium carbonate + 1% manganese dioxide and (7) 1% manganese dioxide. It was found that the unamended submerged soil attained the negative potential of -8.0 mv in the 6th week after transplantation and maintained a decreasing trend attaining -12.0 mv in the 16th week, while Mn0₂ at 1% level with or without calcium carbonate maintained positive potential throughout the experiment. The treatments in general raised the pH higher than those of the unamended soil. The submergence could not increase the pH beyond 5.3 in the unamended soil. Leaching with water, lime and manganese dioxide application lowered the concentration of aluminium, the solubility of which is very sensitive to the changes in acidity. Soil solutions showed peak values of 119.3 to 177.1 ppm of calcium in CaC0₃ treated pots, on the other hands peak concentrations of 64.3 to 75.3 ppm were obtained under control condition. In general, the uptake of Phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and manganese except aluminum was higher in plants grown on pots treated with CaC0₃ and Mn0₂ together.

Objectives:

The objectives of this study were to test the efficiency of lime and manganese dioxide in increasing the pH value of flooded acid sulphate soil and to interpret the reactions in terms of chemical and physicochemical changes in soil.

Methodology:

Green House Experiment: An experiment was set up in a completely randomized design under submerged condition in the Green House of the Department of Soil Science, Dacca University with the following treatments: (I) Control, (2) Leaching with distilled water (3) 0.4% calcium carbonate, (4) 0.8% calcium carbonate, (5) 0.4% calcium carbonate + 1% manganese dioxide, (6) 0.8% calcium carbonate + 1% manganese dioxide and (7) 1% manganese dioxide. Each treatment was replicated three times and an Aus variety, Hashikalmi, was used in this experiment. Two weeks old seedlings were transplanted on 21.3.67 at the rate of 3 plants per pot. Soil solution study: The soil solution collected at six different intervals in the strict absence of air were analysed for (I) Redox potential (2) pH, (3) Iron, (4) Aluminium, (5) Manganese, (6) Calcium, (7) Magnesium, (8) Potassium, (9) Nitrogen, (10) phosphorus and (11) Oxidizable matter. The following methods were adopted:- pH and Eh: Redox potential and pH measurements were carried out with help of a redox - pH Meter. Nitrogen: Nitrogen was determined from the soil solution by means of a microjeldhal, following the method by Piper 1951. Iron: Iron was determined, after reduction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, by the 0- phenanthroline method as described by Fortune and Mellon, 1938. Aluminiurn: Aluminium was determined by Aluminon method as outlined by smith et. al.,1949. Manganese: Manganese was determined colorimetrically by developing colour, with periodate as outlined by Willard and Creathouse, 1917, and later modified by Peech, 1941. Calcium, Magnesium & Potassium: Calcium, magnesium and Potassium were determined directly from the soil solution by using flame Photometer (SP, 900). Phosphate: Phosphate was analysed by a modification of the benzene- isobutyle alcohole method described by Martin and Doty, 1949. Oxidizable matter: Oxidizable matter was determined by a modification of the method prescribed by the American Public Health Association, 1953, for the estimation of oxygen consuming capacity of Sewage. Plant Analysis: Plant samples were taken from each pot at three different stages of growth: Early stage, flowering stage and after harvest of the grains. Suitable amount of Powered Plant tissues were then extracted with perchloric acid, filtered and the final volume was made up to 100 ml. The extract was analysed for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron and aluminium.

In general, the uptake of Phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and manganese except aluminum was higher in plants grown on pots treated with CaC0₃ and Mn0₂ together.
