Enhancement of the Productivity Through Mechanized Intercropping System in Wheat-potato Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Wheat Research Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season 2014-15. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. Treatments were viz. T₁=Wheat (sole) sowing manually in bed, T₂=Potato (sole) planting manually in bed, T₃=Wheat+Potato (inter crop) (sowing+planting) manually in bed, T₄=Wheat (sole) sowing mechanically in bed, T₅=Potato (sole) planting mechanically in bed, T₆=Wheat+Potato (inter crop) (sowing+planting) mechanically y in bed. Yield and yield contributing characters did not show any significance difference among the treatments of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. Treatments were viz. T₁=Wheat (sole) sowing manually in bed, T₂=Potato (sole) planting manually in bed, T₃=Wheat+Potato (inter crop) (sowing+planting) manually in bed, T₄=Wheat (sole) sowing mechanically in bed, T₅=Potato (sole) planting mechanically in bed, T₆=Wheat+Potato (inter crop) (sowing+planting) mechanically y in bed. The experiment was seeded on December 31, 2014. The crop was harvested April 07, 2015. Manual treatments were done manually and it required more labour and time. On the other hand, mechanical treatments were imposed with the help of power driven. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary like irrigation, weeding, insect and pest management. Before harvesting the crop a hail storm along with heavy rainfall was occurred at the end of March, 2015. As a result, the crop was partially damaged. Anyway, the crop was harvested though the yield was reduced. The data was analyzed with SAS 9.1

Achievement/Findings:

Wheat: Plant height, length of spike, spikelets/spike and harvest index was showed significant. Remaining yield and yield contributing characters like tillers/m², spikes/m2, grains/spike, 1000-grain weight, biomass yield and grain yield were not significant. The height plant height (93.4 cm) was measured from T₆ which was identical T₄ (93 cm). The lowest plant height was measured (87.5 cm) in T₁. T₃ gave the longest spike length (11.95 cm) that was identical with T₁ (11.20 cm). T4 gave the smallest spike length (9.93 cm). Almost similar trend was observed in case of spikelets/spike. The highest harvest (41 %) was observed in T₆ which was identical with T₄ (39 %). The lowest HI (36 %) was noticed in T₃. Grain yield of wheat was reduced might be due to late sowing, force maturity as well as heavy rainfall along hail storm at harvesting stage.

Potato: The maximum of potato /hill was obtained from T5 (20) which was statistically differed from other treatments might be due the sole crop as well as sole crop nutrient management was given. The highest potato yield (24.49 t/ha) was observed in sole potato plot which was planted mechanically (T₅) might be due to the effect of higher number of potato/hill as well as plant establishment was better. The lowest tuber yield was observed in T₂ (8.71 t/ha) which was planted manually sole potato might be due to less number of potato/hill. The highest fresh foliage yield (15.55 t/ha) was obtained from T1 (wheat (sole) manually planted) which was statistically differed from other treatments might be due to higher vegetative growth followed by T6 (14.52 t/ha). The lowest fresh foliage yield was obtained from T5 (10.88).

Wheat equivalent yield: In case of wheat equivalent yield T₅ (Potato sole mechanically planting) produce the maximum wheat yield (12.25 t/ha). On the other hand, (Wheat+Potato) intercropping almost similar wheat equivalent yield those were T₃ (Wheat+Potato intercropping by manually)=(9.16 t/ha) and T₆= ( Wheat +Potato intercropping by mechanically) (9.27 t/ha). For confirmation, more trails are needed in future. Fine tuning as well as more fabrication might be necessary to make a prototype mechanized intercropping system.
