Inbred Development in Bitter Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trial was conduced at the experimental field of Vegetable Division, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur in the summer season of 2014. One S₂, one S₃,, one S₅, two S₆ and one S₇ progenies of bitter gourd lines were advanced to S₃, S₄, S₆, S₇ and S₈ generations respectively to develop variable bitter gourd inbred lines for using in the hybrid development program. Wide variation was found in the lines for duration of fruit harvest (DH) which ranged from 20-31 days, fruit length (FL) 6-25.1cm, fruits per plant (Ft/pl) 16-28, average fruit weight (AvFwt) 30-129g, yield per plant (Y/pl) 0.8-2.8kg and fruit fly infestation (Ftfly) 19-28.5% while narrow variation for days to 1st female flower open (D1stF) 30-34, node order of 1st female flower open (N1stF) 19-25 and fruit diameter (FD) 3-3.8cm. Best individuals from every line of bitter gourd were selected and selfed. Three lines were found homozygous morphologically. Seeds of the rest S₂ to S₅ progenies of bitter gourd lines were stored for advancing S₃ to S₆ progenies respectively in the next year.

Objectives:

To produce variable inbred lines for the development of commercial hybrid variety of bitter gourd.

Methodology:

Plant materials and its cultivation: The study consisted of six lines of bitter gourd of S₂ to S₇ generations of indigenous origin. Of these, one was S₂, one S₃, one S₅, two S₆ and one S₇ progenies. The trial was conduced at the experimental field of Vegetable Division, HRC, BARI, Joydebpur. It was a non replicated study. Seeds of each line were sown in poly bag on May 12, 2014. Sixteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on May 28, 2014. The unit plot size was 1.2x9.0m accommodating six plants maintaining 1.2x1.5 m plant spacing within the bed. The land was fertilized with cow-dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @5000, 76, 32, 70, 14.5, 3.6 and 1.0 kg/ha, respectively. Entire cow dung, P, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd of K were applied during pit preparation as basal dose at least 8-10 days before transplanting. Rest of K was applied in two equal installments at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. N was applied in four equal installments at 7, 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Sex pheromone trap was used for controlling fruit fly. Standard agronomic practices were followed as and when necessary. Selfing and selection process was followed on the basis of crop improvement procedure. Selected plants from each line were selfed. Selfing was done early in the morning at different days. Seeds of selfed fruits were stored for advancing next generation. Measured characters: Measured characters were days to 1st female flower open (D1stF), node order of 1st female flower open (N1stF), duration of fruit harvest (DH), fruit length (FL) in cm, fruit diameter (FD) in cm, fruits per plant (Mft/Pl), average fruit weight (AvFwt.) in g, yield per plant (MY/Pl) in kg, per cent fruit fly infestation (Ftfly) and number of selfed fruit harvest (selfed ft).

Achievement/Findings:

Three lines MC01-4-1-1-6-1-6-2, 25-2-6-3-1-1-3 and 03-2-5-1-4-5-5 were found homozygous morphologically. Seeds of the rest S₂ to S₅ progenies of bitter gourd lines were stored for advancing S₃ to S₆ progenies respectively in the next year.
