Non-replicated Progeny Row Trial of Upland Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center Rangpur, during the season 2011-12. Ten (10) entries were tested lines and two were local check. Among ten entries seven (7) entries gave higher yield than the best control. The highest seed cotton yield was recorded in Ra-1 (2007kg/ha), the second, third and fourth place was occupied by BC-086 (1801 kg/ha), Ra-3 (1765kg/ha) and BC-0338 (1759kg/ha) respectively. The highest GOT% was obtained from Ra-1 (39.99%).

Objectives:

To screen out the ten (10) desirable lines from collected or reserved germ plasm of Cotton.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research Center, Rangpur during the year 2011-12. The entries encoded as BC-0338 BC-0168, BC-098, BC-0144, BC-086 Ra-1, Ra-2, Ra- 3, Ra-4, Ra-9 were tested and CB-9 and CB-10 were used as control. The experiment was laid down in augmented design with no replications. Unit plot size was 10 x 3.6m (4 rows). Sowing date was 29-7-11. Each entry was sown four rows in each plot. Plant to plant distance was 0.45m. Two or three water soaked and asataf treated seeds were sown per hole during sowing time but at the final thinning (after 21 days of seed emergence) one seedling per stand was allowed. Green manure (sun-hemp) was ploughed down and decomposed organic matter was applied before final land preparation at the rate of 500 cft/ha. Plant height, number of plants at harvested area, number of boll per plant, single boll weight, seed cotton yield per plots were collected from 10 (ten) randomized selected plants of each plot. Mean values were used for statistical analysis. (1982). The nutrient elements such as Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) , Boron (B), and Magnesium (MgS04) were applied in the row at the rate of 6.45-16-11-5-0.92 and 5.4 kglha respectively as basal dose. At the 1 st side dressing the nutrient elements such as Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K) and Zn were applied at the rate of9.6-15 and 1.94 kg/ha at the seedling age of 25 DAE one side of the cotton row. After 42days of DAE the second side dressing was applied at the rate of 24.19-12.00-27.5-5.76-1.22 kg/ha Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) and Boron (B) respectively just opposite side of the 1st side dressing. When the plants appeared at 62 days third side dressing was done at the rate of 24.19- 12.00-33.00-5.03-0.925kg/ha of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Sulpher (S) and, Boron (B) respectively opposite side of the 2nd side dressing. The last or fourth side dressing was done at the plant age of 75 days at the rate of Nitrogen 16.13 kg and potassium (K) 22 kg /ha respectively. The nutrient was applied at 5-8 cm away from the plant, which was covered up with soil immediately to protect the volatilization loss of nitrogen. Weeding was done two times. Mulching between the rows by power tiller was done three times. Irrigated water was used two times, that was at the third week of November and the 1st week of December at draught situation. After 33 days of sowing, first spray of chloropyriphose was applied against sucking pests such as Jassid and Aphid etc. Other five spray of chloropyriphose in combine with pyrithroid were applied to control sucking and chewing (boll worms) pest. In all cases scouting based spray was followed. Hand picking, Light trap Pheromone trap and Zollaghur/Molasses trap were also used to kill moths and adults of the insects. As a result, more or less insect reproduction was stopped which encouraged friendly agro- ecosystem to some extent. To protect the fungal diseases, Tilt, Indofil and Bavestine were sprayed at seedling and vegetative stage of the plant insect attack and disease incident was keenly observed line wise. Data were collected on number of vegetative branches, number of main stem node of first fruiting branch (N.F.B), number of primary fruiting branches/plant, number of secondary fruiting branches, days to first flowering, days to first boll.
