Modification and Performance Evaluation of a Mango Harvester

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mango harvester was mainly used for harvesting mango fruits with less drudgery and preventing damage to the tree branches or fruits as compared to manual plucking and tree shaking. A mango harvester was designed and fabricated in Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Divisional workshop, BARI, Gazipur during 2014-15 to reduce post harvest loss. The weight of modified harvester is 4.1 kg whereas existing harvester was 1.5 kg. The mango was harvested from different height of mango tree in different location of BARI campus. The highest capacities of modified and existing harvester were found 76.15 and 72.48 kg/h. 95% of mangoes with pedicel length above1-1.5 cm were found by modified harvester whereas it was 82% for existing harvester. The modified BARI mango harvester observed to be heavy weight which reduced its capacity of harvesting but harvested fruits with long pedicel thereby increasing the shelf- life of the fruits.

Objectives:

(a) To modify the existing mango harvester for easy harvesting of mango

Methodology:

The mango harvester was designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2014-2015. It was made of locally available materials. The materials used for fabrication of different parts of the harvester were high carbon steel, MS flat bar, MS rod, MS sheet, nut- bolt, clutch cable, clutch lever, aluminum pipe and other small items. This manual mango harvester has an oval shaped ring which was 250 mm diameter. The ring was worn a rubber to minimize the hardness of ring which sometimes causes injuries to mango. Nylon net was attached to the ring to hold the mangoes when they were cut by the knife. . There was an angle adjuster which was connected to the ring and aluminum pipe by clamp, made of MS sheet. The height of the mango harvester can be maintained up to 2921 mm to 4800 mm by inserting 29 mm diameter pipe into 34 mm diameter pipe. A cutting mechanism was provided at one end of the ring. The cutting blade was divided into two parts which were held together by nut bolt and attached to the knife arm, tension spring and clutch cable. For harvesting mango, the harvester was raised and pedicels of the fruit were taken in between the sharp edge of the blade where it was serrated. When cable lever was pressed the cutter will cut the fruit from its node by applying the lever push action through clutch cable.

Mangoes were harvested from four trees at three different places at BARI campus. The height of the trees was varied from about 20 to 40 ft. The numbers of mangoes per kg were found to be 9, 6, 7 and 8. It was observed that almost all capacities of modified harvester were found higher than that of the existing harvester. The highest capacity of modified and existing harvester was found to be 76.15 and 72.48 kg/h when number of mangoes per kg was 6. The capacity of modified harvester was lower when mango is harvested by climbing tree due to its heavy weight compared to existing harvester. As existing harvester uses pulling action to harvest mango, so drop of the mangoes was more compared to modified harvester and breakage occurs due to dropping mangoes. It was possible to maintain pedicel length of mango around 3-6 cm or more by harvesting modified harvester because it cut mango at a point by applying the lever push action through clutch cable. So drop was very negligible. Mango can be harvested from different height by adjusting height of modified harvester. But due to its heavy weight operator felt easy up to 9-13 ft height. It was observed that when mango was harvested by climbing tree or lower height from operator, harvester frame was kept parallel or 0 degree to the holder and when mango was harvested at higher portion of the tree it was kept 45-55^ofor easy operation. The highest capacity of modified and existing mango harvester was found 76.15 and 72.48 kg/h respectively. It was observed that 95% of mangoes with pedicel length above 1-1.5 cm were found by modified harvester whereas it was 82% for existing harvester. Due to its heavy weight expected capacity was not found from modified harvester. The experiment will be continued in the next year to reduce weight and cost for its better performance.
