Advancement, Opportunities and Challenges of Agricultural Technology Transfer in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The paper focused on the advancement in knowledge and information management for meeting farmers’ needs. Problems related to technology transfer in Bangladesh explored. Special emphasis was laid on the dissemination of technical information in respect to the transfer of modern agricultural technological processes in Bangladesh. Agricultural Knowledge System (AKS), Knowledge and Information System (KIS), and Agricultural Knowledge and Information System (AKIS) had been explicitly defined and stated on the global point of view. Research sub-system, dissemination sub-system and user sub-system were explained in the context of technology transfer mechanism. Technologies developed by the NARS institutes and agricultural universities were explored. The role of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Agriculture Information Service (AIS), input supply agencies as well as role of ICTs in agricultural development evaluated.The role of radio, television, and interactive communication channels in transferring technologies to people of all categories also explored. Data revealed that, farmers ranked highest in the interpersonal communication area followed by television and mobile phone. This clearly indicated that farmers in Bangladesh had shifted their preferences from the traditional communication media to modern electronic interactive communication media. The Certain recommendations for reducing the barriers of technology transfer in Bangladesh suggested at the end.
