Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh has to import 1.5 million metric tons of edible oil other than mustard seeds every year at a cost of more than $1.5 billion. Palm oil was low-cost edible oil. Currently, 1.2 million metric tons of crude palm oil is being imported and refined here a year. Its consumption was suitable for human health and its yield per hector was much higher than any other edible oil. There were some palm orchards available in different locations in Bangladesh. This research program has undertaken to develop small-scale palm oil extraction machine and palm oil refining procedure to utilize the available palm fruits in the country. The main aim of this study is to design and fabricate a palm oil expeller and evaluate its performance.

Objectives:

This research program was undertaken to develop small-scale palm oil extraction machine and palm oil refining procedure to utilize the available palm fruits available in the country.

Methodology:

A palm oil expeller was designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2014-15. Field performance evaluation of the palm oil expeller was conducted after it had fabricated at Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Palm oil was collected from palm orchard of Chittagong hill Tract and sylhet. Palm oil was sterilized before peeling. After peeling the peeled portion is mashed by mashing part and oil was collected.

Achievement/Findings:

Fabrication work is going on the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Post harvest Process Engineering Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Performance evaluation of palm oil expeller will be conducted next year. A palm oil expeller was designed this year. The experiment will be continued to the next year for fabrication and performance evaluation.
