Effect of Boron on the Yield and Yield Components of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was made in the non-calcareous floodplain soil at Sultanpur, Brahmanbaria during two consecutive rabi seasons of 2003-05 to evaluate the effect of boron on pod set and seed yield of mustard cv. BARI Sarisha 9 (Brassica campestries L.). Five levels of boron @ 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg ha^-1 were imposed in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Added B significantly influenced seed yield and yield components of mustard. The highest seed yield (1.39 t ha^-1 in 2003-04 and 1.57 t ha^-1 in 2004-05) was obtained from 1.5 kg B ha^-1 which was 37.0 % increase over boron control treatment. From regression analysis the optimum dose of boron was found to be 1.59 kg ha^-1 to obtain an expected seed yield of 1.43 t ha^-1.

Objectives:

To finding out an optimum dose of boron for maximizing yield of mustard (Brassica campestries L., var. BARI Sarisha-9) grown in non calcareous floodplain soil of Brahmanbaria.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the non-calcareous floodplain soil at Sultanpur, Brahmanbaria (AEZ- 19) during rabi seasons of 2003-04 and 2004-05. Before experimentation, initial soil samples (0-15 cm) were collected and analyzed, and the results were presented. Five levels of boron @ 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg ha^-1 were imposed in a randomized complete block (RCB) design replicated 4 times. A blanket dose of 120, 40, 60, 30 & 2 kg of N, P, K, S & Zn ha^-1 was applied to the soil. The sources of N, P, K, S, Zn and B were urea, triple supper phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc oxide and boric acid, respectively. All PKSZnB+ ½ N were applied at the time of final land preparation and remaining ½ N was top dressed prior to flowering. BARI Sarisha-9 (Brassica campestries) variety seeds were sown continuously in 30 cm apart lines on 14 November 2003 and 11 November 2004. Intercultural operations and other management practices were done as and when required. The crop was harvested at its maturity on 2 February 2004 and 30 January 2005. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and statistically analyzed.
