For many different reasons, the cultivation and contribution of Aus rice grown during pre- kharif decreased over the last two decades. As a matter of making some breakthrough, the present study was to examine the pattern of comparative shares of aus rice cultivation and to determine the economics  of aus rice cultivation by different farm sizes.Data from 160 randomly selected sample farms from Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Comilla, Narsingdi and Chandpur were collected in 1991. The farmers were found to apply urea, TSP and MP almost double in their MV rice field than LV fields. On an average of all farms, 8.83%, 10.04% and 6.55% of total aus rice area were under BR3. IRB and Purbachi yielding 3.82 t/ha, 3.64 t/ha and 3.19 t/ha, respectively. But on an average of all farms and all MV aus rice, 65% farms covered 34.83% MV area of the total aus rice area with an average yield of 3.56 t/ha. The human labor days/ha used by small, medium and large groups were 159.80, 133.97 and 173.66, respectively, whereas on an average of all groups, it was 153.56 mandays/ha. The average human labor cost for LV and MV aus rice was Tk 2630/ha and Tk 4607/ha but the animal labor cost was Tk 2207/ha and Tk 2389/ha for LV and MV, respectively. The smaller the size of the farm the higher the average gross returns per hectare in case of MV aus rice. It was also true for average gross margin both on full cost and cash cost basis. But for LV, the medium farms obtained the highest gross returns (Tk 8686/ha) and net returns (Tk 640/ha and Tk 5703/ha on full and cash cost basis).

(i) To examine the pattern of comparative shares of aus rice cultivation

(ii) To determine the economics  of aus rice cultivation under different farm size groups.

One hundred sixty representative sample farms were randomly selected for the study from a prepared list of aus rice growers of Mymensingh (Sadar), Kishoreganj (Katiadi), Comilla (Debidar), Narsingdi (Sadar) and Chandpur (Sadar) .Survey districts, upazilas and unions were selected on the basis of relative importance of  aus rice cultivation in consultation with the upazila extension personnel. The investigation was done in 1991 just after the harvest of aus crop with a pre-designed questionnaire. . Sixteen selected farmers from each of two villages from each union in one upazila were interviewed randomly. Collected data were then summarized, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Tabular method was used for analyzing the data. After data collection, the total sample farms were categorized into three groups by land holdings; small  (0.01 ha to 1.00 ha), medium (1.01 to 2.00 ha), and large (above 2.00 ha).

The average yield and the percentage of MV area increased with the decrease of farm size but the percentage of reporting farms of MV aus rice increased with the increase in farm size. The human labor, animal labor, fertilizers and insecticide's costs were the major cost items for MV aus rice cultivation. The cost per maund and cost per kg of of MV aus rice increased with the increase of farm size. On an average of all groups of farms, the cost per maund and cost per kg of MV aus rice was found Tk 136.03 and Tk 3.64 whereas it was Tk 155.62 and Tk 4.99 for LV aus rice, respectively. However, benefit cost analysis showed tha,t MV aus rice cultivation is more profitable than LVs on full cost basis. In MV aus rice cultivation, more cash cost is needed. Because MV aus rice requires more amount of inputs and better management practices and in in time. Hence input cost  should be reduced for profitable aus rice cultivation. Analysis of factor shares and income shares of different groups of farms showed that the residual which goes to the operator was found to be high for MV compared to LV rice, and the farmer earned the highest share of the total income from MV than from LV rice. In addition, the residual share of the total income was found more in case of MV compared to LV rice. Thus the MV aus rice cultivation could be more profitable than LV aus rice.
