On an average, the farm size was found 1.48 hectare in the survey areas. Among the MV rice grown by the farmers in the boro season, BR3 gave the highest yield of 4.70 t/ha by 30% farms covering an area of 10.42% of the total rice area. Eighty-five percent farms grew IR8 which yielded 4.08 t/ha. It covered the highest area of 52.67%. The percentage of area under IR8 decreased with the increase of farm sizes. The medium group of farms obtained the highest yield of 3.74 t/ha and 1.95 t/ha growing MV and LV rice, respectively. the percentage of MV area increased with the increase in farm sizes. The cost of total labour, hired labour, fertilizer, manure, insecticides and irrigation for both LV and MV rice cultivation increased with the increase in farm sizes. The average gross returns obtained by all groups of farmers was TK. 10826/ha and TK. 19926/ha whereas the average net returns were TK. 423/ha and TK. 5314/ha for LV and MV rice, respectively. On full cost basis, the total cost for both LV and MV rice increased with the increase in farm sizes. Thus, the net returns and benefit cost ratio for both LV and MV rice increased with the decrease of farm sizes. Hence, smaller the size of the farm, better was the profit due to less cash cost. Human labour always earned the highest share of output from LV but the residual which goes to the operator farm observed to be higher from MV. Owner operator earned more income for management in producing MV compared to LV.

  1. To know the socio-economic profile of the farmers to assess their ability for introducing irrigated MV rice cultivation,
  2. To determine the area coverage and yield structure of different varieties of rice,
  3. To assess the profitability of irrigated MV & LV rice cultivation under different categories of farm, and
  4. To determine the relative shares of earning from MV and LV rice cultivation under different farm size groups.

Data for the present study were collected through survey method by utilizing pretested questionnaire during the harvesting period (April-May, 1992). A total of 160 sample farmers from eight thanas growing MV and LV rice under irrigated condition were selected by adopting simple random sampling method taking 20 farmers from each selected thana. Seven irrigated districts viz., Tangail, Narshingdi, Dhaka, Comilla, Chandpur, Mymensingh and Kishoregonj were selected purposively. A total of eight thanas were selected discussing with the respective District Agricultural Extension personnel. Two villages from each thana were randomly selected and then 10 sample farmers from a list of all farming households from each village were selected considering small (0.01 to 1.00 ha), medium (1.01 to 2.00 ha) and large farms (2.01 ha and above). The collected data were then summarized, tabulated and analyzed according to the objectives of the study. Tabular method and cost accounting technique were followed in analyzing the data.

A positive relationship between farm size and family size was observed in the study area. The family size increased with the increase in farm sizes. Among the different varieties grown in the Boro season, BR3 gave the highest yield of 4.70 t/ha and covered 10.42% rice area, while IR8 covered the highest area of 52.67% of the total rice area with on an average yield of 4.08 t/ha. The medium group of farms obtained the highest yield of both LV and MV which were 1.95 t/ha and 3.74 t/ha, respectively. The total labour cost and hired labour cost increased with the increase in farm sizes but the family labour cost decreased with the increase in farm sizes. The average gross returns of irrigated LV and MV rice were Tk. 10826/ha and Tk. 19926/ha, respectively. However, the average gross returns of MV irrigated rice increased with the decrease in farm size. The total cost for LV and MV irrigated rice increased with the increase in farm size on both full cost and cash cost basis. Thus the average net returns and benefit cost ratio increased with the decrease in farm size. Human labour earned the highest share of output, 39.27% from LV and 27.64% from MV, while current inputs earned 28.04% and 22.66% from LV and MV, respectively. The residual which goes to the operator for management earned negative share from LV and 29.67% (positive) from MV. From all groups of farm, owner operator received 65.05% and 74.04% of total income in producing LV and MV, respectively. The smaller the size of the farm, higher was the income for the owner operator. The smaller the size of the farm, the better was the profit for irrigated boro rice cultivation.
