An experiment was conducted to characterization of component lines for developing of hybrid rice at the experimental farm, Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during July to December 2009. The experiment was conducted by using twenty nine component lines for development of hybrid rice, where eight Cytoplasmic Male Sterile (CMS/A) viz., BC5; IR 58A X Dakshahi B (A1), BC5; Dakshahi A X Kalijira 12B (A2), BC5; DA X Premful B (A3), BC5; IR 62A X Kalijira 12B (A4) BC5; IR 58A X Dubshail B (A5), BC5; IR 62A X Kalijira 2B (A6) BC5; Jin 23A X Rajbhog B (A7) BC5; YOU 1A X Kalijira 12B (A8), six maintainer (B) Dakshahi B (B1), Kalijira 12B (B2), Premful B (B3), Dubshail B (B4), Kalijira 2B (B5) and Rajbhog B (B6) and fifteen restorer (R) China 1R (R1), BU 1R (R2), BU 2R (R3), BU 3R (R4), BU 7R (R5), BU 11R (R6), BAU 507R (R7), BAU 509R (R8), BAU 521R (R9), BAU 523R (R10), Hira dhan 338R (R11), IR IR 63-8R (R12), 59682-132-2R (R13), IR 650-112-90-11-332R (R14) and Northern R (R15) lines were used. The materials used in the experiment were obtained through the courtesy of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BSMRAU, Gazipur. The experimental plot was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Adequate soil fertility was ensured by applying additional quantities of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and ZnSO4 @ 180-100-70-60-10 kg/ha, respectively. Total TSP, MOP, Gypsum and ZnSO4 were applied at final land preparation. As per recommendation the total Urea was splited into three installments for application at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (Anonymous 2010). Healthy seedlings of 30 days old incase of A and B lines and 32 days incase of R lines were transplanted in separate strips of the experimental field. In each strip 20 x 20 cm spacing between plant to plant and row to row, respectively were maintained. The collected data for each character was subjected to the analysis of variance following the RCBD design. Data collection on date of sowing and transplanting, leaf characters, anthocyanin colouration of leaf, penultimate leaf pubescence, leaf legule, flag leaf characters, days to flowering, pollen sterility and fertility (%) of CMS line, lema and palea anthocyanin colouration, culm length and diameter (cm), node internodal anthocyanin colouration, plant height (cm), number of tillers per hill, panicle characters, attitude of panicle and its branches, spikelet characteristics, days to maturity, grain yield per hill (g), harvest index, number of spikelets per panicle and spikelets sterility, out crossing rate (%), weight of grains per panicle (g), weight of 1000 grain (g), Grain yield (t/ha), spikelet length and width (mm), spikelet and grain colour.
