Ammi Analysis of Yield Performance and Stability of Rice Genotypes Across Different Haor Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotype-environment interaction and stability performance were investigated on grain yield with five rice genotypes at five locations in Haor areas of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The ANOVA for grain yield revealed highly significant (P<0.01) variation among genotypes, environments and their interactions. The mean grain yield value of genotypes averaged over environments indicated that BRRI dhan55 (G5) and BRRI dhan28 (G4 ) were the highest (7.46 tha ^-1) and the lowest (6.29 tha^-1) yielders, respectively. The mean grain yield ranged from7.03 tha^-1 for Biswnath (E2) to 6.59 tha^-1 for Sunamganj (E4). In AMMI analysis, AMMI-1 biplot showed that Biswanath (E2) and Baniachang (E1) were favorable environments; Sunamganj (E4 ) and Sylhet Sadar (E3 ) were unfavorable environments. Among genotypes, BR7840-54-3-1 (G1), BR7840-54-2-5-1(G3) and BRRI dhan55 (G5) produced higher average mean yields. In AMMI-2 biplot, Habiganj Sadar (E5) and Sylhet Sadar (E3) were the most discriminating environments, while BR7840-54-3-1 (G1) and BR7840-54-1-2-5(G2) were the most responsive genotypes. The most suitable genotypes for Biswanath (E2) and Sunamganj (E4) were genotype BR7840-54-3-1(G1); BRRI dhan28 (G4) for Sylhet Sadar (E3); BR7840-54-2-5-1(G3) for Baniachang (E1) while genotypes BR7840-54-1-2-5(G2) was suitable for Habiganj Sadar (E5). Among the tested genotypes, BR7840-54-2-5-1(G3) had higher mean grain yield values coupled with small IPCA1 scores and hence it is recommended for all environments.

Objectives:

Using AMMI analysis and biplot facility, the promising rice yield data were analysed to determine the nature and magnitude of G x E interaction effects on grain yield in diverse production environments to identify high yielding and stable genotypes adapted to varieties (BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan55) were evaluated under these trials.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted at five different Haor areas (latitude 24 ^o 25'59``N and longitude 91^o 25`00``E in the east-northern parts of the country) during winter season, 2012. The average maximum and minimum temperature ranged from 25.78 to 30.98^oC and 13.32 to 22.14^oC, respectively; average rainfall ranged from 256.8 to 266.6 cm and relative humidity varied from 72.65% during the crop growing period. The soil texture in the experimented area was predominated with clay loom to sandy loom (Islam, 2009). Three promising rice genotypes with two popular check varieties (BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan55) were evaluated under these trials. The experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Forty five days old 2-3 seedlings were transplanted at 25 cm X 15 cm (row to row and plant to plant) in 30 m² plots. Other agronomic and plant protection measures were taken as required. ANOVA and Genotype-Environment Interaction (GEI) were estimated by the AMMI model (Zobel et al., 1988). All data were subjected to analysis using Cropstat version7.2.

Achievement/Findings:

Substantial variation was observed in the mean performance of all the tested genotypes (G) over environments (E) and on the environmental means over tested genotypes. The main effects of G and E accounted for 57.34% and 11.21%, respectively and G x E interaction accounted for 19.48% of the total variation. G3 (6.95 tha^-1) and G 5 (7.46 tha^-1) were the top performers, while G4 (6.29 tha^-1) was the poorest and G1 (6.85 tha^-1) and G2 (6.66 tha^-1) were moderate yielders. Among the environments, E4 and E3 were poor, E5 was medium and E2 and E1 were rich environments. Following significant genotype by environment interaction, multivariate analysis (AMMI) was used to visualize the mean performance vs stability of the genotypes over the environments. Based on the information generated from AMMI-1 biplot, E2 and E1 were favorable environments, while genotypes, G1, G3 and G5 had higher average mean yields. In the IPCA1 vs. IPCA2 biplot, E5 and E3 were the most discriminating environments, while G1 and G2 were the most responsive genotypes. The AMMI-2 biplot showed that the best genotype with respect to sites E2 and E4 was G1, and G4 was well fit E3, while G3 was well fit for E1 and G2 in E5.
