An experiment was conducted at three non mill zone areas of Sirajganj, Hobiganj and Satkhira districts during 2008-09 and 2009-10 cropping year to find out the performance of different high value vegetables as first and mungbean as second intercrop in paired row planting system of sugarcane. Four vegetable crops namely, Carrot, IPSA pea1, Garden pea (BARI garden pea1) and Bushbean (BARI Jhar sim1) were tested in paired row cane. No significant effect of intercropping on tiller, millable cane and cane yield was found in the experiment. The highest cane yield of 89.96 t ha-1 was obtained in treatment T2 (T1+ carrot-mungbean) but the lowest yield (76.87 t ha-1) was calculated in T5 (T1+ bushbeanmungbean) in cropping season 2008-09. In case of cropping season 2009-10, the highest (82.71 t ha-1) cane yield was found in T4 (T1+ garden pea-mungbean) while the lowest yield of 80.41 t ha-1 was recorded from T3 (T1+ IPSA pea-mungbean). It was found that total adjusted cane yield was higher from sugarcane and intercropping practices compared to sole sugarcane cultivation. The highest benefit cost ratio of 1.92 was recorded from paired row cane+ garden pea-mungbean combination and lowest BCR (1.42) was calculated from paired row cane only. Growing mungbean as second intercrop with PRC increased monitory income as well as helped to improve soil health by fixing atmospheric nitrogen and adding organic matter in soil. The above result revealed that all intercropping packages tested in the experiment were found profitable over sole sugarcane (paired row cane only) cultivation. Among the four intercrops the most profitable packages are PRC+ carrot-munghbean and PRC+garden pea-mungbean under farmers’ condition.

An experiment was designed to find out the performance of different high value vegetables with sugarcane as first and mungbean as second intercrop in paired row sugarcane under farmers’ condition in non mill zone areas.

The experiment was conducted during cropping season 2008-09 and 2009-2010 in three place of non mill zone area of Sirajganj, Hobiganj and Satkhira district where harvested cane is used for gur making. Four different high value vegetables namely, Carrot, IPSA pea 1, Garden pea (BARI Garden pea 1) and Bushbean (BARI Jhar shim 1) as first intercrops followed by mungbean variety BINA mung 5 as second intercrop were grown with sugarcane variety Isd 16. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications covering three areas as mention above. The unit plot size was 8m x 8m. The treatments included are: T1 = Paired row cane (PRC) only, T2 = T1 + carrot – mungbean,T3 = T1 + IPSA pea – mungbean, T4 = T1 + Garden pea – mungbean, T5 = T1 + Bushbean – mungbean Two budded sugarcane setts were planted in each plot during 1-15 November 2008 and 2009 in three different location at 60 cm apart keeping a wide distance of 140 cm in between two paired rows of cane with intercrop namely, carrot 4 lines (T2), IPSA pea 4 lines (T3), garden pea 4 line (T4) and bushbean 4 lines (T5) were planted in between cane rows. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended dose (BARC, 2005). All TSP, Gypsum, one third of MOP and Urea were applied in trench and mixed with soil prior to planting of setts. The second dose of (1/3 rd) urea and (1/3 rd) MOP were applied as first top dressing at 120 DAP. Final top dressing of rest urea and MOP were applied in the month of April. Recommended dose of fertilizer was also applied for first and 2nd intercrops. Recommended cultural practices and plant protection measures were taken. The intercrops were harvested at mature stages of each crop. Data in respect of yield of intercrops and yield contributing parameters of sugarcane i.e. germination, tillering, millable cane, tons cane per unit area, Brix% were recorded. Besides expenses incurred and returns received from different crops were accounted so as to find out combined expenses and income from all crop combinations enlisted. Finally the adjusted yield of sugarcane was calculated by adding sugarcane equivalent yield of intercrops with the yield of sole cane crop. Economic analysis was done to assess the income earned from different crops. After harvest, data were collected, compiled, analyzed and interpreted following the standard statistical procedures.

From the above discussion it can be concluded that for higher economic return high value vegetable carrot and garden pea as first and mungbean as second intercrop with paired row sugarcane could be practiced under farmers’ condition in different cane growing zone.
