Effect of Different Plant Extracts on the Fecundity of Granary Weevil, Sitophilus Granarius L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leaf and seed extracts of bonkalmi, Ipomoea maxima; eucalyptus, Eucalyptus alba and nishinda, Vitex negundo were used in the experiment to evaluate for their effect on fecundity against granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July to December 2006. Results showed that all the extracts of test plants had effects on fecundity to the granary weevil. The reduction of F₁ adults was highest in eucalyptus for granary weevil. Effect on fecundity of both leaf and seed extracts are more or less same. Methanol extracts showed highest effect on fecundity followed by acetone, ethanol and water extracts. Effect on fecundity increased proportionally with the concentration of the plant extracts.

Objectives:

The present study on growth inhibiting property of plant extracts of bonkalmi, eucalyptus and nishinda against granary weevil had been undertaken as a conducive component of IPM to evaluate the effectiveness fecundity of the test insects.

Methodology:

The experiment on the effect of some plant extracts on the fecundity of granary weevil was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July 2006 to December 2006. The Test Plants Bonkalmi, Ipomoea maxima (L.f.) Don ex Sweet (I. sepiara Koen. ex Roxb.) (Family: Convolvulaceae) was collected from Potuakhali, Bangladesh while Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus alba Reinw. ex Blume (Family: Myrtaceae) and Nishinda, Vitex negundo Linn. (Family: Verbanaceae) were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) campus. Bonkalmi was collected from Potuakhali because the plant is available in the coastal zone of Bangladesh and it is not available in BAU Campus. The available Ipomoea ftstulosa is ‘Dhol Kalmi’ but not Bonkalmi. The Test Insect The granary weevil, S. granarius was collected from the local market of Mymensingh as well as from the government silos and reared in the Laboratory of the Department of Entomology, BAU, Mymensingh at 27- 30°C temperature and 70-75% relative humidity. Preparation of Plant Extracts The extraction was done according to the method originally described by Talukder and Howse (1993) with a few modifications. Leaves and seeds of bonkalmi, eucalyptus and nishinda were washed in water after collection and then air-dried under the shade. The air-dried seeds and leaves were then oven dried at 60°C. The dried material were ground manually and passed through a 25-mesh sieve to obtain fine dust. Ten gram of fine dust of each plant extracts were separately mixed with 200 ml of each solvent (acetone, ethanol, methanol and water). The mixture was then stirred for 30 minutes in a magnetic stirrer and left to stand for next 24 hours. The mixture was then filtered through a fine cloth and again through a filter paper (Whatman No.1). The filtrate was then boiled for solvent evaporation in a water bath (at 80°C for water extract and 70°C for chemical extract) to a constant volume. After the evaporation the condensed extracts were preserved in tightly corked labeled bottles and stored in a refrigerator for further use. Before using in experiment each solution was diluted with distilled water to prepare different concentration of plant extract.

Achievement/Findings:

The reduction of F₁ adult emergence of granary weevil by using the extract of leaf and seed extract of bonkalmi, eucalyptus and nishinda can control the weevil easily. The plant extract will be very economic, its preparation and usage will be too much familiar to the farmers, and environment will remain safer. Considering cost effectiveness, easy preparation, easy usage technology and environment-friendly advantages plant extract can be the most important component of integrated pest management (IPM) in controlling granary weevil of storage.
