Screening of Ufra (ditylenchus Angustus) Resistant Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Out of fifty entries tested against ufra disease of rice caused by rice stem nematode Ditylenchus angustus, only two entries namely Fukuhonami and Matsuhonami showed highly resistant; seven namely Rayeda, Bazail, Hunenwase, Shinanokogane, Kinonishiki, Aokazi and Koshinihsini showed resistant; one namely Patni-23 Barisal- 2 showed moderate resistant reaction against ufra. Other entries were found to be susceptible and highly susceptible against ufra.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to find out the source of resistance against ufra disease of rice (Ditylenchus angustus).

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research institute (BRRI), Gazipur during T. Aman, 2007. Collection of varieties: All the varieties (50) were collected from, Genetic Resource and Seed (GRS) Division of Bangladesh Rice research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur-1701. Layout and design of the experiment: The experiment was laid out following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Screening of rice varieties: A total of 50 varieties were tested against ufra. Pre-germinated seeds of different varieties were sown in earthen pots (25 cm diameter). At 20 DAS the seedlings were inoculated by uniformly spreading the previously nematode infested plant materials from the BR3 culture grown in pots (Rahman, 1993). Chlorotic discoloration (diagnostic ufra symptom at the vegetative stage) was observed at the base on a few plants at 25-30 days after inoculation. Some symptoms were more evident at about 50-55 days after inoculation. Disease reaction was scored at 55 DAS. Based on the percentage of infection the test entries were classified into six broad groups viz. highly resistant, resistant, moderate resistant, susceptible, moderate susceptible and highly susceptible (Rahman, 1993). The varieties which were found to be resistant (R) and highly resistant (HR) in the first trial were again sown in the pots, inoculated and disease reaction was scored following the similar procedure for the confirmation of their resistance against ufra (Ditylenchus angustus) disease of rice. Data recording: Data on following parameters were recorded: 1. Total number of tiller. 2. Total number of infested tiller. 3. Percentage of infested tiller.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on percentage of plants infection, the entries showed varying degrees of resistance reactions against ufra. Assessment of individual plants also indicated a variation of development of symptom both between and within the test entries. The resistant symptom was recorded in preliminary separation of resistant entries. This symptom appeared as discrete The susceptible symptom was also recorded to discard the susceptible entries. This symptom appeared as continuous whitish patches on the affected leaf blades.
