An experiment was conducted to find out the effective planting date to minimize the incidence of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and study the relationship between disease incidence and vector population on chilli (Capsicum annum L.). BARI Marich-1 was planted at the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI Gazipur on six different dates viz. 1st November, 15 th November, 30 th November, 15 th December, 30 th December and 15 th January of 2014-15 with four replications. Four yellow traps were placed in the experimental field after transplanting to attract the aphid for vectors counting. Significant variation of disease incidence and severity was found in different planting dates. Disease incidence and severity ranged from 19.75 to 47.25 % and 0.83 to 3.29 respectively in different planting dates. The lowest disease incidence and severity was found on 30 th November planting. The highest disease incidence and severity was recorded from 15 th January planting. There was significant positive correlation was also observed between aphid population and incidence of CMV in the field.

, The present study was undertaken to find out a suitable planting date to avoid the incidence of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in chilli.

The experiment was carried out in the field of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2014-15. The experiment was carried out in randomized completely block design (RBD) having four replications. The treatments were applied to the plots randomly in each block. The plot size was 2 × 2 m2. Six planting dates were used as treatment.  BARI-Marich1 was used in this experiment. Seedlings were raised in the nursery bed. Five weeks old seedlings were transplanted in the field on November-01, 15, 30, December-15, 30, January. Spacing was maintained 50 x 50 cm. Irrigation, drainage, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The experimental plots were monitored regularly to observe CMV symptoms. Diseases incidence was calculated using the following formula.

Diseases incidence (%)= Number of infected plants/number plants in the plot x 100

Data on number of fruits per plant, yield kg per plot were also recorded. Fresh fruit yield of chilli ton ha-1 was calculated by converting the fresh fruit weight per plot yield into hectare and was expressed in ton. All data were analyzed statistically using R-software. Treatment mean were compared using Least Significant Difference Test (LSD). Four yellow traps were placed in the experimental field after transplanting to attract the aphid vectors. The number of aphids was counted one day interval with change of water and sticker at 4 p.m.

Significant variation of disease incidence and severity was found in different planting dates. Whoever, disease incidence and severity ranged from 19.75 to 47.25 % and 0.83 to 3.29 respectively in different planting dates. The highest disease incidence 47.25 % was recorded from 15 th January which was statistically similar with 1st November (45.35 %) and 30 th December (42.75 %) planting. The lowest disease incidence 19.75 % was found on 30 th November planting which was significantly deferent from other planting dates. Similarly, the highest disease severity 3.29 was found in 15 th January planting and the lowest (0.83) in 30 th November planting. Among the treatments 30 th November planting was found better than other planting dates both in CMV incidence and severity. The number of CMV infected plants was increased with the increase of aphid population in the field. The relationship was linear, positive and significant (R2 = 0.7976) and could be expressed by the regression equation Y= 0.0107+ 4.1346, where Y= CMV infected plants (%) and X =aphid population. The R2 value indicates that the spread of CMV in the field might be attributed by aphid population by 79.76 %. Yield of BARI Marich-1 in different planting dates. The highest fruits/plant (154.8), kg/plot (3.99) as well fresh fruit yield ton/hectare (9.97) was found in 30 th November planting which was significantly different from other planting dates. The lowest yield i.e. fruits/plant (93.75), kg/plot (2.95) and ton/hectare (7.52) was recorded from 15 th January planting. Among the treatments planting on 30 th November performed better in respect of yield than others.  It might be due to low vector presser during at early stage of vegetative growth so that plants remain free of infection at early stage.
