Genetic Variability and Character Association in Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Mill.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty eight tomato genotypes were evaluated in randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment was done in the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), campus Mymensingh. The purpose of the study was to reveal the genetic variability among the ; yield contributing traits and their direct and indirect contribution of these parameters towards the yield and identify better combinations as selection criteria for developing high yielding tomato genotypes. Significant differences among genotypes were observed in all characters except height of first leaf appearance at seedling stage. The genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were high for days to germination, fruits per bunch, harvest index and yield per plant (g). All characters were highly heritable in broad sense. The characters germination(%), fruits per bunch, harvest index, vitamin C content, sugar content(%) were positively correlated with yield per plant. Among them germination (%), fruits per bunch, harvest index were significantly correlated with yield per plant. Germination percent (0.26), height of first leaf appearance (0.19) days to first flowering (0.20) and harvest index (0.42) exhibited direct effect on grain yield. On the basis of correlation and path analysis, percent germination, days to first flowering, fruits per bunch and harvest index are important characters to be considered for the development of high yielding tomato genotype.

Objectives:

The study was conducted to find out the genetic variability among the yield contributing traits and their direct and indirect contribution of these traits towards yield to identify better combinations of traits for developing high yielding tomato genotypes.

Methodology:

Twenty eight tomato genotypes were used in the experiment among them 20 F₁s were obtained from hybridization among the selected 8 parents. Six parents viz. World champion, Flobidal, Big cherry, Sunlight pole, Cl-3d-0-99, Fut Wed Abrid were collected from BARI, Gazipur. The parents TC0020-10-41-28-3-0-12 and Durch fuegel (wild) were collected from BAU and Germany respectively. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Each replication contains 30 plants. Single plant was grown in an earthen pot. Data were recorded from 30 plants of each genotypes on 11 quantitative traits viz. germination(%), days to germination, height of first leaf appearance, days to first branching, days to first flowering, fruits per bunch, days to first harvest, harvest index, vitamin C content (Visual titration method, Plummer, 1954), total sugar content and yield per plant(g). Analysis of variance was performed using the plant breeding statistical program (PLBSTAT, Version 2N, Utz 2007). Heritability in broad sense, genetic advance and correlations were computed. The correlation coefficient were further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis .

In Path co-efficient analysis, the traits percent germination, fruits per bunch and harvest index have positive direct effect and positively correlated with yield per plant, days to first flowering has positive direct effect and negatively correlated with yield per plant. The characters days to germination, days to first flowering, days to first harvesting have negative direct effect and negatively correlated with yield per plant.
