A field experiment was carried out at research field of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional Station (R/S), Comilla to evaluate the response of different modern rice varieties (MVs) and hybrids of T. Aman and Boro season on various nitrogen (N) levels under rice-rice cropping pattern. The experiment comprised of three rice genotypes both the seasons. BRRI dhan49, BR7870-5*(Nils)-2-HR2 and BRRI hybrid dhan4 in T. Aman season while in Boro season, BRRI dhan45, BRRI dhan50 and BRRI hybrid dhan2 were used. Five doses of nitrogen were used viz.,0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg/ha in T.Aman season but in case of Boro season, one additional N dose 200 kg N/ha was used with previous five N doses. The experiment was conducted in split plot design with three replications where N rates were assigned in main plots and varieties in sub plots. All the tested genotypes of both seasons were highly responsive to different levels of nitrogen. BRRI dhan49 showed maximum grain yield (5.42 t/ha) and highest grain N uptake (81.67 kg/ha) at 80 kg N/ha in T.Aman season. In Boro season maximum grain yield (8.28 t/ha) and highest N uptake (111.33 kg/ha) was found in case of BRRI hybrid dhan2 at 160 kg N/ha level. This hybrid variety gave statistically similar grain yield at 120 and 160 kg N/ha level. However BRRI dhan45 produced maximum grain yield (7.19 t/ha) at 120 kg N/ha level. The calculated optimum N doses were 73, 101, 90, 103, 106 and 125 kg/ha for BRRI dhan49, BR7870-5*(Nils)-2-HR2, BRRI hybrid dhan4, BRRI dhan45, BRRI dhan50 and BRRI hybrid dhan2 respectively.

The present study was undertaken to determine the N response behavior of MVs, Hybrids and promising line of T. Aman and Boro season of Bangladesh.

The present study was undertaken to determine the N response behavior of MVs, Hybrids and promising line of T. Aman and Boro season of Bangladesh. 26 kg K and 24 kg S/ha in Boro season as Soil Test Based (STB). The experimental design was split-plot having N fertilizer in the main plots and varieties in the sub-plot. The treatments were repeated thrice. In T. Aman season, one BRRI modern variety BRRI dhan49, one newly developed promising line (BR7870-5*(Nils)-2-HR2) and one newly released hybrid variety BRRI hybrid dhan4 and in Boro season, BRRI dhan45, BRRI dhan50 and BRRI hybrid dhan2 were tested. Urea was applied in three equal splits i.e 1/3 N at 10-12 Days after Transplanting (DAT), 1/3 N at 25-30 DAT and 1/3 at 5-7 days before panicle initiation stage. TSP, MOP, Zypsum and ZnSO4 were applied at final land preparation. The unit plot size was 5m×6m. Thirty and forty day old seedlings using 1-2 seedlings/hill were transplanted in T.Aman and Boro season, respectively. All intercultural operations were done as and when required. At maturity, the crop was harvested from 5m2 areas at the centre of each plot and 16 hills were collected for straw yield. The grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content straw yield as oven dry basis. Nitrogen content from plant samples were determined by micro kjeldahl method. Statistical analysis of grain and straw yield, N uptake of tested T.Aman and Boro varieties were done using statistix 10 software.

From the study, it is found that all the tested modern and hybrid rice varieties are highly responsive to different levels of nitrogen. BRRI dhan49 showed maximum grain yield and the highest grain N uptake at 80 kg N/ha in T.Aman season. Considering optimum and economic dose of N, BRRI dhan49 is a good option for maximum yield benefit for Aman season. In case of Boro season BRRI hybrid dhan2 and BRRI dhan45 performed better considering grain yield and N uptake in response to applied N.
