Advancing S6 to S7 Generation of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty S₆ lines from 900 M were advanced to S₇ generation in order to develop superior inbred liner(s) Variation was found among the S₆ lines for different traits. Selected S₆ plants were selfed. S₇ seeds from selfed plants were collected and stored for maintenance and further studies.

Objectives:

To advance S₇ generation from S₆ as the last step to develop inbred lines.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Joydebpur during rabi, 2012-13. Seeds were sown on 26 November, 2012. Each S₆ material was sown in two rows with 5 m long plot. Spacing was 100 x 20 cm (one plant/hill). Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S and Zn respectively. Standard agronomic practices were followed and plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary. Selected 300 plants were selfed following hand pollination method. Data were recorded on days to tasseling, days to silking, days to maturity, plant and ear heights (cm), ear length, ear diameter, no. of rows/ear, no. of grains/row, leaf attitude, anthocyanin in node, leaf sheath, glumes, ring glumes, anther and silk, angle between main axis and lateral branches, grain type and color, ear shape and no. of selfed ear harvested.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean performances of S₆lines for each character were presented. Variation was observed among the S₆lines for different traits. A total of 300 plants were selfed. The selfed plants were harvested individually and dried properly. Finally 193 ears were selected and preserved separately for maintenance, further study and utilization in breeding program.
