The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS, Barisal during rabi season of 2012-2013 to find out the optimum rate of herbicide to control weeds in onion field for getting higher yield. The treatments were: T1= Spraying of herbicide @ 750 ml/ha at 2-4 leaf stage of weed (LSW), T2 = Spraying of herbicide @ 1000 ml/ha spray at 2-4 LSW, T3 = Spraying of herbicide @1250 ml/ha spray at 2-4 LSW, T4 = 2 hand weeding at 15 and 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and T5=Control. Among the weed species, Bothua, (Chenopodium album), Shama(Echinochloa crusgalli), Helencha (Jussiaea repens), Mutha, (Cyperus rotundus), Durba (Cynodon dactylon) were dominant in onion field. The resulst showed that herbicide controlled 83-100% broad leaf weeds such as Chenopoduim albuman and Heliotropium indicum. The maximum bulb yield of 9.06 t/ha was obtained at Joydebpur followed by T3 treatment while highest yield (7.59 ton/h) at Barisal was obtained from T2 treatment and it was statistically different from other treatments. The lowest bulb of yield 6.81 t/ha at Joydebpur and 4.48 t/ha at Barisal was recorded in T5 treatment. The highest gross return, gross margin and BCR were also obtained from the treatment T2 at both the locations. From the above findings it might be concluded that spraying herbicide of Oxidization (Kite 25 EC) @ 1000 ml /ha, at 2-4 leaf stage of weed is suitable in controlling broad leaf weeds (eg. Chenopodium album, Heliotropium indicum, Physalis heterophylla) for higher yield of onion.

To find out the optimum rate of herbicide to control weeds in onion field for getting higher yield.

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS, Barisal during rabi season of 2012-2013.The soil of the experimental plot was salty clay loam with pH 6.5 at Joydebpur of AEZ 28. The soil of Barisal is clay loam with PH 4.2-8.1 of AEZ 13. Trade name of the herbicide was Oxidization and Chemical name was Kite 25 EC. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were: 1) T1 = Spraying of herbicide @ 750 ml/ha at 2-4 leaf stage of weed (LSW), (2) T2=Spraying herbicide @ 1000 ml/ha spray at 2.4 LSW, (3) T3= Spraying herbicide @ 1250 ml/ha spray at 2.4 LSW, (4) T4= Two hand weeding at 15 and 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and (5) T5= Control. Seedling age of onion was 35 days during transplanting. Onion plot of the experiment was irrigated with three times. Spraying of herbicide was done by spray machine, as much as possible avoiding the contact with the onion seedling. The unit plot size was 4.8m x 4 m. Taherpuri variety of onion was used as the test crop. The crop was transplanted on 20 December, 2012-2013 maintaining the spacing of 40 cm x 15 cm at both the locations. The crop was fertilized with N90 P45 K120 S30 B1Zn4 kg/ha in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid, respectively. Half of N and K and full dose of P and S was applied at the time of land preparation and remaining N and K was applied as top dressing at 25 and 50 days after transplanting (DAT) followed by irrigation. Weed samples were collected using 50 cm x 50 cm quadrates from randomly selected three places from each plot at 15 days interval to record number of weed, species of weed and dry weight of weeds. Randomly selected 5 bulbs were taken for measurement of bulb length (cm) and bulb dia (cm) as a yield contributing character. Bulb/m2 was calculated by 50 m x 50 m quadrate from randomly selected three places of each plot. Weed control efficiency (WCE) was calculated using the formula: WCE (%) = (A-B/A) x 100 where A= Dry weight of weeds in no weeding plots and B= Dry weight of weeds in treated plots. The crop was harvested on 5 April, 2012 and 15 April, 2013, at Joydebpur and Barisal respectivly Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statically and mean separations were done by LSD test.

From the above findings it may be concluded that spraying herbicide Kite 25 EC @ 1000 ml /ha would be more effective economically in case of broad leaf of onion.
