Analysis of G × E Interaction by Using the Ammi in Advanced Rice Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with objectives of determining the effect of genotype, environment and their interaction for grain yield and to identify the most stable advance rice genotypes. Ten rice genotypes were grown at twelve sites in northern part of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid down in RCBD with three replications. The combined ANOVA for grain yield revealed highly significant (P<0.01) for genotypes, environments and their interactions. This indicated that the environments were diverse and variability among the genotypes. The mean grain yield value of tested genotypes averaged over environments indicated that G3 (BR7812-19-1-6-1P2) and G7(BR18) had the highest (7.0 tha^-1) and lowest (6.15 tha^-1) grain yield respectively. None of the tested genotypes gave grain yield over check varieties (G9 (BRRI dhan29) and G10(BRRI dhan55)). The mean grain yield ranged from7.43 tha^-1 for E8(Mogolhat) to 6.13 tha^-1 for E12(Laxipichap). In AMMI analysis, E4(Ekarchali), E2(Pairabond), E5(Vitpirbond), E6(Bamondanga) and E1(Rasidpur)are the most differentiating environments, while G7(BR18), G1(IR77496-31-2-1-3-1), G8(BRRI dhan28) and G10(BRRI dhan55)are the most responsive genotypes. Among the studied genotypes or environments, G7(BR18) and E2(Pairabond) were most unstable or discriminate.On the other hand, the environment E3(Mirbag) was found to have favorable environments for G3(BR7812-19-1-6-1P2), G4(BR7812-19-1-6-1P4) and G5(BR7812-1-1-3-1) genotypes. The best genotype with respect to sites E6(Bamondanga) is G3(BR7812-19- 1-6-1P2) and G4(BR7812-19-1-6-1P4) but unsuitable for E2(Pairabond). Genotype G7(BR18) and G2(IR2266-42-6-2) is suitable for E4(Ekarchali) and E8(Mogolhat) but unsuitable for E1(Rasidpur). With respect to E2(Pairabond) and E8(Mogolhat), Genotypes G8(BRRI dhan28) and G2(IR2266-42-6-2) are particularly suitable respectively, while genotypes G3(BR7812-19-1-6-1P2) and G4(BR7812-19-1-6-1P4) were well fit for E5(Vitpirbond).

Objectives:

The objectives of this study were to assess the extent of genotype × environment interaction for grain yield, to evaluate rice genotypes for their yield performance and stability and to select and release genotypes with high grain yield and other desirable traits either for specific and/or wide area production depending on their differential responses to environments.

Methodology:

Eight rice genotypes which were promoted from preliminary variety trial to national variety trial plus two checks were evaluated in Northern region of Bangladesh from 2012 to 2013 at twelve environments. Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications was used. Plantings were done in the main cropping season (rainy season) following the optimal dates in each respective location. All relevant agronomic practices were applied when deemed necessary. In this paper mainly focuses on grain yield data (t ha^-1) at 14% moisture level. Analysis of variance was done for each environment. Bartlett’s test was used to assess homogeneity of error variances prior to combine analysis over environments. The grain yield data for ten genotypes in twelve environments were subjected to combine and AMMI analysis of variance using Crop Stat version 7.2, statistical software (CropStat7.2). AMMI uses ordinary ANOVA to analyze the main effects (additive part) and Principal Component.

Achievement/Findings:

The AMMI analysis of variance for rice grain yield (tha^-1) of ten genotypes tested in twelve environments showed that 28.74% of the total sum of squares was attributed to environmental effects, only 22.56% to genotypic effects and 48.26% to genotype × environment interaction effects. The environments were diverse and caused the greatest variation in grain yield. The genotype × environment interaction sum of squares was about 2 times larger than that for genotypes, which determined substantial differences in genotypic response across environments.
