Effect on Physio-morphological Character Due to Salt Stress at Reproductive Stage on Rice Plant

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Salinity is one of the important abiotic stresses limiting rice productivity. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on the reproductive phase of rice. FL478 (salt tolerant variety) and BRRI dhan28 (salt sensitive variety) were grown in plastic perforated pots on the plastic bowl containing water. Only one plant with mother tiller was allowed to grow per pot. At reduction division stage, NaCl was added in water of the bowl and maintain EC at 12 dS/m. The salt stress reduced grain yield 41% in FL478 and 62% in BRRI dhan28. The major affect was due to higher percentage of sterility (52% in FL478 but it raised to 163% in BRRI dhan28) than nonsaline condition (16-25% sterility in both the varieties). Na/K ratio increased significantly in the third leaf of tolerant FL478 (3.2) but in susceptible BRRI dhan28, it increased in flag leaf (2.4), second leaf (3.6), third leaf (4.0) and panicle (1.3) than nonsaline conditions (0.1-0.5). It indicated the possible mechanism lies in 3rd leaf of salt tolerant variety to reduce salt translocation to panicle and thus contributed to lower sterility and higher grain yield.

Objectives:

1. To record the nature of damage in the panicle due to salinity stress during panicle formation.
2. To determine Na/K ratio in the leaves, stem and panicle of tolerant and intolerant varieties.

Methodology:

Two varieties – BRRI dhan28 and FL478 were used in this pot experiment. BRRI dhan28 is a salt sensitive high yielding variety (HYV) while FL478 is a salt tolerant rice varieties. To determine salt sensitivity for rice (Oryza sativa L.) at reproductive stage, an experiment was carried out at completely randomized design with three replications at plant breeding division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. The experiment was conducted in pot in order to prevent from effecting unwanted factors and to have a better control on condition. Methods on growing plants: Sprouted seeds of FL478 and BRRI dhan28 were sown in plastic perforated pot containing soil. The soils were fertilized with Urea, TSP and MP @ 5-2-2 g/pot. The plastic pots were kept in a plastic bowl containing water. Six plastic pots were accommodated in a bowl. The tillers come from mother plants were clipped off from the beginning of the experiment. Thus only the mother plants were allowed to grow. At reduction division stage, NaCl salt was added in the plastic bowl and the EC of the solution was maintained at 12dS/m. A control treatment without salt was maintained. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed on all experimental data and means were compared using the Duncan’s multiple range test.

Achievement/Findings:

Increasing salinity decreased total grain yield 41% in FL478 and 62% in BRRI dhan28. In this case, the major affect was observed higher in the percentage of sterility than non-saline condition. Na/K increased significantly only in the 3rd leaf of tolerant FL478 but in susceptible BRRI dhan28 Na/K ratio increased in flag leaf, 3rd leaf and panicle. The increment of Na/K ratio in 3rd leaf might be a tolerant mechanism of salt tolerant rice genotype FL478.
