Production of Test Cross Hybrids for Evaluation of Inbred Lines of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four sets of field corn test crosses were made through line x tester method. Thirty six S₄ lines from NK46 (Set I) were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BlL 79), twelve S₄ lines of commercial hybrid Nath Samrat (Set II) were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BIL 29), twelve inbred lines (Set III) were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BlL 95) and sixteen S₃ lines Wang 11 (Set IV) were crossed with four testers (BIL 20, BlL 22, BIL 28 and BIL 79) in Hathazari, Rahmatpur, Joydebpur and Ishardi, respectively during 2012-2013 in order to select superior inbred line(s) and productive crosses as well. The produced four sets of test crosses would be evaluated in the next rabi season.

Objectives:

1. To produce test cross hybrids which will be evaluated

2. To find out heterotic patterns and partners of field corn inbred lines.

Methodology:

The experimental materials consisted four sets of field corn Set I: Thirty six S4 lines from NK46 were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BIL 79), Set II: Twelve Sz lines of commercial hybrid Nath Samrat were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BIL 29), Set III: Twelve inbred lines were crossed with two testers (BIL 28 and BIL 95) and Set IV: Thirty S3 lines Wang 11 were crossed with four testers (BIL 20, BIL 22, BIL 28 and BIL 79) in Hathazari, Rahmatpur, Joydebpur and Ishardi, respectively during 2012-2013. In case of set I, S₄ materials were sown in a two row with 5m long on 25 November, 2012. For synchronization of flowering two testers were sown for three times (two row with 5m long for each time) on 22, 25 and 28 November, 2012 and in set II seeds of the twelve S₄ lines were sown on 08 December, 2012 and seeds of two testers were sown on 08 and 15 December, respectively. In Set III twelve inbred lines were sown on 28 November, 2012 and seeds of two testers were sown on 28 November and 03 December, 2012, respectively and in Set IV sixteen S₃ lines were sown on 25 November, 2012 and seeds of four testers were sown on 25 November and 28 November, 2012, respectively. Each line was sown in one row plot with 5m long and each tester was sown in 6 rows with 5 m long. Spacing was 100 x 20 cm between rows and hill, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after proper thinning. After every two row 1.5m spacing was maintained for easy movement. Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 & 1 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O, S, Zn and B respectively. Standard agronomic practices including irrigation were done to raise a healthy crop. Undesirable plants from the lines were rouged out before flowering. Selected plants of each line were crossed with each tester to produce enough F₁, seed of the targeted combinations. Crosses were made carefully by hand. At the same time maintenance of the lines were also done through selfing.

Achievement/Findings:

Seeds of 72, 24, 24 and 64 test crosses were produced through crossing from Set I, II, III and IV, respectively and after final selection seeds were stored for evaluation in the next season. The amount of crossed F₁, seeds produced from different test cross hybrids are presented respectively.
