Screening of Country Bean Lines Against Pod Borer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on screening of country bean lines/varieties against pod borer was carried out at Plant Genetic Resource Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during rabi 2014-15 cropping season. A total of 50 country bean lines along with BARI released country bean variety BARI Sheem 7 were included in this program. Among 50 country bean lines 35 lines received no infestation by pod borer. Among 15 lines, no lines were found tolerant to pod borer. Lines RISA 116 and RISA 135 found moderately tolerant (MT), AR 43 and RISA 73 found moderately susceptible (MS) and rest of the lines found susceptible (S) and only line RISA 139 found very susceptible (VS) to pod borer.

Objectives:

To find out the most tolerant lines against aphid and or pod borer.

Methodology:

A study on screening of country bean lines/varieties against pod borer was carried out at Plant Genetic Resource Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during rabi 2014-15 cropping season. A total of 50 country bean lines along with BARI released country bean variety BARI Sheem 7 were included in this program. Land area was about 900m² for the study. Country bean seeds were sown on September 2014 having a spacing of 2mx2m. All fertilizers and manures were applied according to the fertilizer guide. All intercultural operations were taken as per requirement of the crop. For each observation, pod borer infestation was recorded on healthy and infested fruits at each harvest and marketable pod was harvested from January to February 2015. Data was analyzed for comparison.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study, it is revealed that the tested lines (excluding 35-lines) were not tolerant to pod borer. Only 2 lines (RISA 116, RISA 135) found moderately tolerant, 2-lines (AR 43 and RISA 73) found moderately susceptible (MS) and rest of the lines found susceptible (S) and only 1-line RISA 139 found very susceptible (VS) to pod borer.
