Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

In order to investigate present status of commercial aqua-medicines used in various aquaculture activities in Bangladesh, a survey was conducted with fish farmers, aqua-medicines sellers and representative of pharmaceutical companies from July, 2012 to March, 2013. Fish farmers were found to use a wide range of aqua-medicines. For water quality management and gas reducer, Aqua Photo, Mega Zeo Plus, Pondkleen, JV Geolite, Matrix, Bio-Aqua 50, Geotox, Ammonil, Blumix, V5 and Eco Marin; as disinfectant, Virex and Timsen; as growth promoter, Acimix Super Fish, Spa, Megavit Aqua, Charger Gel, Rapid Grow and Nutrimix; as probiotic, Navio Plus, Biozyme, Pro Marine and Aqua Boost; as plankton producer, Aquamin, Benthod and Bio Marine; as stress remover, Energy Plus and Osmosaline; as oxygen supplier, Bio-ox, Oxyflow and O2 Marine; as antibiotic, Oxy-Dox-F, Captor, Renamox, Renamycine, Cipro Vet, CT-Dox and Coli-tetrravet; as hormone, Flash; as parasite killer, Argulex and Copper Sulphate; as feed binder, Aqua Bond and as unwanted species controller, Aqurote Gold, Rotenil and Hunter were found to be widely used. Some farmers were seen to use several traditional aqua-medicines for aqua health management including potasium permanganate, formalin, salt, lime, melathion, bleaching powder etc. The present investigation pointed out the lack of technical knowledge of farmers about use of aqua-medicines.

  1. To know an updated information of commercial aqua drugs and chemicals.
  2. To know purpose of using, appropriate dosages and method of application of aqua medicines.

Selection of the study area: The investigation was conducted in Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Kishoregonj, Comilla, Norshindi, Rajbari, Faridpur and Khulna region. Preparation of the survey schedule: According to the objectives of the study an interview schedule was prepared to collect the expected data. At first a draft schedule was prepared in accordance with the objectives of the study. Then the schedule was pre-tested to verify the relevance of the questions and the nature of response of the sample procedure. After pre-testing and necessary adjustment, a final survey schedule was developed. Period of study: In this case the period of study was July, 2012 to March, 2013. Target group: Since aquaculture activities in Bangladesh quite diversified, data were collected from different target group to have an overall picture of the aqua medicines used in aquaculture activities. Collection of data: Data were collected by direct interviews with farmers, representative of pharmaceutical companies and aqua-medicine seller. A set of interview schedules was designed for this study. Each person responded was given a brief introduction about the nature and purpose of the study during the interview. They were asked the questions systematically in a very simple manner with explanation wherever it was felt necessary and information was recorded. Methodology: From the list of huge number of new aqua-medicines found in market the first attempt was made to find out all those new products used by farmers in the following aspects of their need: 1. Aqua medicine used for pond and water quality management and gas reducer 2. Aqua medicine used as disinfectant 3. Aqua medicine used as growth promoter 4. Aqua medicine used as probiotics 5. Aqua medicine used as plankton producer 6. Aqua medicine used as stress remover 7. Aqua medicine used as oxygen supplier 8. Aqua medicine used as antibiotic 9. Aqua medicine used as hormone 10. Aqua medicine used as parasite killer 11. Aqua medicine used as feed binder 12. Aqua medicine used as unwanted species controller.
