Mohammad Omar Faruque
Department of Aquaculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

A study was carried out on a derelict pond located near the Shahjalal hall in BAU campus, Mymensingh to check the efficacy of three drugs to improve its water quality for six months. The drugs were Zeolite gold, Oxy-gold and Gasonex plus manufactured by Fishtech (BD) Ltd.. For each drug three doses were selected as follows: less than recommended, recommended and more than recommended to assess their efficacy. The water quality parameters that were determined before and after drug treatment were ammonia (mg/l), nitrite (mg/l), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), pH, hardness (mg/l) and alkalinity (mg/l). For Zeolite gold recommended dose was 4 mg/l, whereas for Oxy-gold, 1.0 mg/l and for Gasonex plus, 0.1 mg/l. The water quality parameters were monitored with a certain time interval during experiment before and after drug treatment. Effective doses and their efficacies were determined on the basis of desired water quality change. Sample collections and water quality measurements were made between 6.30 am and 11.00 am, on each sampling day. It was found that ammonia, nitrite, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, hardness and pH were 4.9 mg/l, 0.29 mg/l, 130 mg/l, 2.3 mg/l, 120 mg/l and 6.4 before the drug treatment. After the drug treatment, the above values were improved to 0.5 to 3.5 mg/l, 0 to 0.25 mg/l, 195 to 235 mg/l, 3.0 to 7.0 mg/l, 160 to 215 mg/l and 7.3 to 8.2 respectively. It was concluded that to improve the amount of ammonia, nitrite, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, hardness and pH “Zeolite gold” was effective at 6 mg/l which was “more than recommended” dose. To improve the amount of dissolved oxygen “Oxy-gold” was effective at 1.6 mg/l and for the improvement of ammonia “Gasonex plus” was effective at 0.14 mg/l which were also “more than recommended” dose.

  1. To verify the efficacy of drug doses for developing the water quality parameters;
  2. To cross check the suggested doses and dosages of the drugs by Fishtech (BD) Ltd.

Study area: The area of the study was a derelict pond located in the BAU campus near Shahjalal Hall where the length and width were 19.56 m and 10.6 m respectively with 1.20 m depth. The pond was rectangular in shape with zigzag pond bottom and dike. Pond description: Due to the presence of aquatic weeds and lack of proper sunlight, water of the pond was spoiled with the evidence of bad odor. There was no inlet and outlet. So, the pond depth directly depended on rainfall. Selected drugs used for experiment: The following three drugs were selected from Fishtech (BD) Ltd for water quality management: Zeolite gold, Oxy-gold, and Gasonex plus. Recommended doses were 4 mg/l for Zeolite gold, 1.0 mg/l for oxy-gold and 0.1 mg/l for Gasonex plus. Sampled water was also treated by zeolite gold with less than recommended and more than recommended doses as 2 mg/l and 6 mg/l. For oxy-gold it was 0.8 mg/l and 1.6 mg/l respectively. For Gasonex plus less than recommended and more than recommended doses were 0.06 mg/l and 0.14 mg/l respectively. Zeolite gold: The company name of Zeolite is Zeolite gold. It is used to optimize ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, Sulpher dioxide, nitrate and nitrite in water. It is recommended to use Zeolite at 30-40 days interval for maintenance of physico-chemical properties of water. Composition of Zeolite gold are SiO2 (68.5%), Al2O3 (11.5%), CaO (6.8%), Na2O (5.08%), MgO (3.5%), Fe2O3 (2.5%), K2O (0.49%), Mn (0.04%) and P (0.010%). Oxy-gold: The Oxy-gold is used to increase dissolved oxygen in water. Its chemical composition is Sodium percarbonate (90%). It is found in 1 Kg plastic jar in the market. It is recommended to use 1g per ton of water. Gasonex plus: Gasonex plus is the extract of some natural ingredients which help to reduce the ammonia, Sulfur Di-Oxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, Methane etc. It is recommended to use Gasonex plus at a rate of 200 - 400 g/acre. It prevents black gill and blue gill diseases also. It is available in 100 g and 200 g packet at the market. Determination of water quality parameters: The available water quality parameters were observed before and the resultant parameters, after drug treatment with a certain time interval after conducting the experiment. On the basis of resultant water quality change, the efficiency of the drugs were worked out and requisite doses were determined. The measurement of water quality and sample collection was done between 6.30 am and 11.00 am, in every sampling day. By using different testing kits Ammonia (mg/l), nitrite (mg/l), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), pH, hardness (mg/l) and alkalinity (mg/l) were measured. Collection and treatment of water samples: For collection of water samples a number of clear 2000 ml black bottles were used. They were marked with water depth and sampling date. From three levels of water column (upper, middle and bottom) the samples were taken in the bottle and mixed together to get a sample. Plate 6 shows the collection of water sample from the pond. Analysis of water quality parameters: Different water quality parameters like ammpnia, pH, temperature, nitrite, dissolve oxygen, alkalinity was measured.

Of the three selected aqua drugs by Fishtech (BD) Ltd.: Zeolite gold, Oxy-gold and Gasonex plus to improve the water quality parameters of a derelict pond, all the three drugs were found to be needed in more than the recommended dose by the pharmaceutical company to improve the water qualities. The water quality parameters were ammonia (mg/l), nitrite (mg/l), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), pH, hardness (mg/l) and alkalinity (mg/l). Zeolite gold was found to be effective for maintaining ammonia, nitrite, dissolved oxygen, pH, hardness and alkalinity. Oxygold was found to be effective for increasing the oxygen level of pond water. Gasonex plus was found to be effective for maintaining the ammonia level good for fish culture.
