Estimation of Genetic Parameters, Character Association and Path Analysis in Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic parameters, character association and path analysis were studied for six yield contributing traits and grain yield per plant in 24 diverge genotypes of wheat. It was observed that spikes per plant and 1000 grain weight exhibited high genotypic coefficient of variation and high heritability associated with high genetic advance as percentage of mean. Genotypic correlation coefficient was higher than the corresponding phenotypic correlation coefficient. Grain yield had exhibited significant and positive correlation with number of spikes per plant, plant height, number of grains per spike and 1000 grain weight. of path analysis indicated that spikes/plant had the highest direct positive effect on grain yield followed by spike length and number of spikelets per spike, which suggested that these traits contributed maximum to grain yield and direct selection of these traits would be effected towards the improvement of yield.

Objectives:

The present investigation was undertaken to study the extent of genetic variability, nature of character association and contribution of four different physiological traits towards grain yield in wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in medium high land belonging to the gangetic alluvial soil tract, agro ecological zone, AEZ-11 having calcareous dark grey flood plain soil. The soil was silty loam with pH value of 8.3. The materials of the experiment consisted of 24 genotypes of spring wheat. These genotypes were collected from Regional Wheat Research Center, Shyampur, Rajshahi of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). The experimental plot was ploughed and laddered to bring the desired tilth. All weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. Urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP), zypsum and cowdung were applied at the rate of 220, 180, 50, 120 and 6000 kg/ha respectively. Cowdung was applied at the beginning of land preparation. Two third of urea and entire quantity of TSP, MP and Zypsum were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest one third of Urea was top dressed 21 days after sowing (crown root initiation stage) following the first irrigation. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Each replication was consisted of 25 plots and each of the plots was 2.0 m long with five rows. The spacing was 40 cm between rows and 5 cm between plants in a row. The space maintained between the plots was 80 cm and between the replication was one meter. Seeds were sown continuously by hand in rows and after complete emergence; 5 cm distance was maintained between plant after thinning and gap filling in a row of the plot. Data were recorded on individual plant basis from 10 randomly selected plants of each genotype from the five rows per plot in each replication. Among the characters studied number of spikes/plant, spike length, number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike were recorded on plot basis and plant height were recorded in the field and remaining characters were recorded in the laboratory after harvesting. Phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were computed. Broad sense heritability was estimated and genetic advance as percentage of mean was computed. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were calculated and path coefficient analysis was computed following the standard methods.

Achievement/Findings:

In correlation and path coefficient analysis, it was observed that number of spikes/plant was most yield contributing trait in wheat. This trait also exhibited high genotypic coefficient of variation coupled with high genetic advance as percentage of mean. Therefore, the results suggested that selection based on these traits would be more effective for improvement of grain yield in wheat.
