Effect of Planting Method on Yield Contributing Characters of Modern Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during aman season to investigate the performance of some modern rice varieties. The experiment consisted of (i) two planting methods viz. direct wet-seeding and transplanting and (ii) eight modern rice varieties viz. of BR10, BR11, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33. Planting method did not affect plant height and grain yield significantly but it produced significant effect on number of hills m^-2, number of fertile tillers hill^-1, number of sterile tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1, number of sterile spikelets panicle^-1, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. Grain yield was not significantly affected by planting methods but it was numerically higher in transplanting method. Straw yield and biological yield were significantly increased in direct wet-seeding method than transplanting method but harvest index was significantly higher in transplanting method than direct wetseeding method. BR10 in direct wet-seeding method produced highest number of hill m^-2, longest panicle and highest number of grains panicle^-1 which leads to highest grain yield. On the other hand, BRRI dhan33 produced lowest number of fertile tillers hill^-1 and lowest number of grains panicle^-1 proceed to lowest grain yield in direct wet-seeding method. In transplanting method, grain yield was highest in BR11 and lowest in BRRI dhan33. Crop duration was shortest in BRRI dhan33. The number of fertile tillers hill^-1 and number of grains panicle^-1 in BR11 were identical with BR10 with the consequence of identical grain yield production in these two varieties. Grain yield in BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33 were identical with BRRI dhan33 in which grain yield was lowest. Straw yield was highest in BRRI dhan33 but it was statistically similar with BR11, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan32. In BR10, straw yield was lowest but it was at par with BR11. In BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33 harvest index was statistically similar; it was also similar with BR10 and BR11. However, harvest index was highest in BR10 and lowest in BRRI dhan33. Irrespective of variety, crop duration was shorter in direct wet-seeding method than transplanting method. The relative profitability advantage of direct wet-seeding rice cultivation was Tk. 2170.00 ha^-1compared to transplant one.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to examine the comparative agro-economic performances of some modern rice variety grown under both transplanting and direct wet-seeding methods in aman season.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experimental field is situated under subtropical climate where rainfall is high during kharif (aman season) (April to September) season. Eight modern rice variety viz. BR10, BR11, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan33 were grown both at direct wet seeding and transplanting method to demonstrate their performance. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replications. Method of planting was assigned to the main plot and variety in the sub plot. The treatments were assigned in the respective plots at random. The land was prepared thoroughly by tilling single time with a tractor drawn rotavator and subsequently ploughing four times with country plough followed by laddering. The land was uniformly fertilized with triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum at the rate of 100, 60 and 60 kgha^-1, respectively at final land preparation. Urea at the rate of 150 kg ha^-1 was top dressed in three equal splits on 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing or transplanting. Seeds of the variety were collected from BRRI, Gazipur. Seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours. After sprouting, the seeds were broadcast by hand in the well puddle plot (in case of direct wet seeded crop) as well as in the nursery bed (for transplanted crop) at the rate of 70 and 25 kg ha^-1, respectively. Transplanting was done with 30-day old seedling on the puddle field after land preparation. Three seedlings hill-1 were used with a spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. In the direct wet-seeded plots weedicide (Ron star) was applied for the one time to control weeds after 10 days of sowing @ 1.21 Lha^-1. Weeds were controlled twice by hand pulling on 15 and 30 days after transplanting in the transplanted plots. Irrigation was done from time to time in order to provide congenial condition for proper growth and development of the crop. The crop was attacked by yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas) at the vegetative phase which was successfully controlled by applying Basudin 10 G at the rate of 10 kg ha. From planting to harvesting, the crops were kept under constant observations. When 90% of the grains become golden yellow, the crop was thought to be matured. The varieties included in the study matured at different dates. On maturity, the crop was harvested manually by a sickle. Collected data were analyzed statistically by following the ANOVA technique and the mean differences of the treatments and their combinations were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
