Evaluation of Performance of Boer Goat at BLRI

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objective of the study is to evaluate the productive and reproductive performances of pure Boer goats and their progenies in Bangladesh conditions. The research was started at Goat Research Station of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), Savar, Dhaka from January 2014. All the does and buck were kept in permanent house with slated floor raised above the ground level with sufficient space to keep them comfortable. Animals was supplied green grass adlibitum and concentrate (17% CP, 11MJ/kg DM) was offered twice daily (morning and evening) at the rate of 300g per head per day. Milk yield was recorded and composition was analyzed throughout the lactation period. The birth weight (kg) of newborn kids was taken by digital weighing balance within one hour after birth. The subsequent weight of kids was recorded in the morning and before feeding up to fortnight throughout the year. The pure breeding (Boer goat male x Boer goat female) program was designed such way that resist inbreeding. Subsequently, data on productive and reproductive performances was recorded. The average birth weight of Boer kids was 3.78±0.60 kg. The average weaning weight and weaning age of Boer kids were 19.83±0.68 kg and 88.0±1.92 days, respectively. The average growth rate of Boer kids was 0.180±0.003 kg/d. The average milk yield of Boer goat was 0.867 ±0.48 kg/day. Milk composition such as dry matter, fat, crude protein and ash were16.34 ±0.53%, 5.63 ±0.20%, 4.08 ±0.14% and 0. 75±O.04%, respectively. The Days open and weight of does at post partum heat were 108.50±3.50 day and 46.l8±4.93 kg, respectively

Objectives:

To evaluate the productive and reproductive performances of pure Boer goats and their progenies in Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

The research was started at Goat Research Station of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar Dhaka from January 2014. Bengal Livestock & Fodder has imported Boer meat goat from South Africa to trial for faster weight gain. At starting period 4 females (does) and 1 male (buck) was received by BLRI from Bengal Livestock & Fodder. All imported animals were reared at Goat Research Station, at BLRI. All the 'does' and buck were kept in permanent house with slated floor raised above the ground level with sufficient space to keep them comfortable. Buck iwas always kept separately from 'does' to avoid unplanned mating. Animals was supplied green grass adlibitum and concentrate (17% CP, 11MJ/kg DM) was offered twice daily (morning and evening) at the rate of 300g (100kg concentrate mixture contain 30 kg crushed maize, 50 kg wheat bran, 19 kg mustard oil cake, the diet were fortified with vitamin mineral premix at the rate of 0.1 kg per 100 kg and 1 kg salt were used, mixed up uniformly) per head per day. At the onset of the experiment milk yield was recorded and composition was analyzed throughout the lactation period. During that time kids was separate from their does. The birth weight (kg) of newborn kids was taken by digital weighing balance within one hour after birth. The subsequent weight of kids was recorded in the morning and before feeding up to fortnight throughout the year. The pure breeding (Boer goat male x Boer goat female) program was designed in such way that resists inbreeding. Subsequently, data on productive and reproductive performances was recorded. All the relevant data was analyzed by SPSS version 17.0 Statistical computer programme.

Average weaning weight and weaning age of Boer kid were 19.83±0.68 kg and 88.0±1.92 days, respectively. The growth rate of Boer kids was 0.018±0.003 kg/d. The milk yield of Boer goat was at Goat and Sheep production Research Farm was o.867 ±0.48 kg. Milk composition such as dry matter, fat, crude protein and ash were 16.34±0.530%, 5.63±O.20%, 4.08±0.14% and 0.775±O.04%, respectively. Days open and post partum heat weight of Boer goat doe at Goat and Sheep production Research Farm were 108.50±3.50 days and 46.18±4.93 kg, respectively.
