Exploring Biological Control of Weed by Fungal Pathogens. Iii. Selection of Some Fungal Pathogens of Weeds Which Are Non-pathogenic to Crop Plants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most of the fungal pathogens tested against the crop plant were found to be pathogenic. The disease incidence recorded were 22-100%. However, Alternaria spp. and Fusarium link respectively isolated from Sutki and chanchi grown in the wheat field were found to be somewhat non-pathogenic to the wheat plants.

Objectives:

To select some fungal pathogens which are non-pathogenic to crop plants.

Methodology:

Different fungal pathogens causing the diseases of different weed plants grown in different crop fields were collected, isolated and identified for carrying out the pathogenicity test on different crop plants. The desired amount of inoculum for each fungus was prepared by transferring the fungus from the stock culture to the petri-dishes containing PDA medium and was incubated at room temperature for three weeks. Then the fungal suspension (spores + mycelia) was prepared with sterilized water for inoculating the crop plants. Seeds of different crop plants (5 seeds/pot) were sown in pots (10" dia). When the seedlings attained the age of 20 days, they were inoculated by spraying the fungal suspension in the evening and the inoculated plants were covered by the moist polyethylene bags to maintain sufficient relative humidity necessary for infection. Polyethylene bags were removed after three days and the plants were kept in the laboratory for another one day before recording the prevalence of the disease incidence. Thereafter, the plants were evaluated by recording the percent of diseased area due to infection of specific fungus.

Achievement/Findings:

From the present study it is revealed that most of the fungal pathogens tested are pathogenic to that particular crop with which the particular weed host of the fungal pathogens are living side by side. Only Alternaria spp. and Fusarium link were found somewhat non-pathogenic to the wheat plant. Attempts could be made to control the weed Sutki and chanchi grown in the wheat field by spraying the fungal suspension of Alternaria spp. and Fusarium link respectively.
