Morphological Characterization of Local Aus Rice Germplasm (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh to determine some of the morphological characters of local Aus rice germplasm viz. Aus dhan, Lema, Chitri, Ausaloi, Aus gara binni, Kajli, Gori, Pankhiraj, Kumri aus, Surjomoni and Kalokochi. The morphological characters, yield and yield contributing components were significantly different among the tested germplasm. Kajli produced maximum tillers (13 tiller hill-1), flag leaf area (57cm2), effective tillers (11 effective tiller hill-1), straw and grain yield (4 t ha-1). Aus gara binni produced the highest plant height, panicle length and the highest filled grain panicle-1 but the lowest number of tiller hill-1, number of effective tiller hill-1, straw and grain yield. Ausaloi produced the lowest 1000 grain weight (16g) and Pankhiraj yielded the highest harvest index. Among all, the shortest variety was Surjomoni. Kumri aus had the shortest growth duration (87 days) to maturity. The overall results of the field experiment demonstrated that Kajli had the best performance for grain yield.

Objectives:

To evaluate the morphological characters of some local Aus rice germplasm grown in Bangladesh, which may further use in the breeding program.

Methodology:

Lema, Chitri, Ausaloi, Aus gara binni, Kajli, Gori, Pankhiraj, Kumri aus, Surjomoni and Kalokochi were transplanted in the Field Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh (24⁰75' N, 90⁰50' E), during Aus season 2010 in a randomized complete block design with three replication. The net plot size was 4 x 3 m2. The row to row spacing was 20 cm and plant to plant 15 cm. Single seedling was transplanted in each hill. The spacing between the individual plots was 1 m. Recommended cultural practices and irrigations were done for better growth and development of the plant. The panicle which has at least one grain/panicle of a tiller was considered as productive i.e. effective tiller. Presence of any food material in the spikelet was considered as filled grain. Harvest was done when 80% of the grains became golden in color. Five hills excluding border hills were randomly selected from each plot. Selected plants were pulled and were separately bundled and properly tagged for recording necessary data. Grain and straw yields were determined by harvesting one squire meter area which was prefixed at the centre of each plot. The harvested crops were then threshed and cleaned. Grain and straw weights were recorded after sun drying. The weight was converted at 14% moisture. The biological yield was calculated with the following formula: Biological yield = Grain yield (t ha^-1) + Straw yield (t ha^-1) The harvest index was calculated by using the following formula: Harvest index (%) = (Economic yield/Biological yield) x 100, Where, Economic yield = Grain yield Biological yield = Grain yield + Straw yield.

Achievement/Findings:

The growth duration and yield of tested traditional Aus rice varieties were low. The tillering capacity of most of the Aus rice varieties were also low. Among the tested germplasm, Kajli, which produced the highest number (10.56) of effective tillers hill^-1showed better performance in terms of grain yield. Further trials are needed to be done with a great number of Aus rice varieties. It will be helpful for further breeding program.
