A study was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during rabi seasons of 2009 -2010 to study the effect of Rhizobium inoculate in nodulation and dry matter production of lentil. We used BINA L4, TAL 640 and mixed culture of both as Rhizobium inoculants; BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur-2 and BARI Masur-3 as planting material. Performance of Rhizobium inoculants with urea at 50 kg N ha-1 and control was compared. Both Rhizobium inoculants produced mentionable number of nodules with all the lentil verities. But Rhizobium strain BINA L4 performed better than Rhizobium strain TAL 640. BARI Masur-3 performed better than other two lentil varieties in respect of nodule number and weight and dry matter production of lentil. It might be suggested that either Rhizobium strain BINA L4 or TAL 640 or mixture of both could be used for lentil cultivation.

To evaluate the performance of Rhizobium inoculants in producing nodule and dry matter production of lentil.

We conducted a field experiment during the rabi seasons of 2009 -2010 at the research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The soil of the field was well drained silty loam with pH 6.7, 1.085 % organic carbon, 0.089% total N, 11.95 ppm available P, 0.12 meq/100g soil exchangeable K, 0.12 meq/100g soil exchangeable Ca, 3.95 me/100g soil exchangeable Mg. We used BINA L4, TAL 640 and mixed culture of both as Rhizobium inoculants; BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur-2 and BARI Masur-3 as planting material. We compared the performance of Rhizobium inoculants with urea at 50 kg N ha-1 and control. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design having four replications putting lentil varieties in main plots and inoculation in sub plots. Fertilizers such as P and K were applied at 26 and 33 kg ha-1 as basal. Fresh seeds of lentil were dipped in the respective culture broth of 5 days growth for two and half an hours. The seeds were dried in shade. The inoculated seeds of three inoculation treatments were randomly placed in the 5 unit plots of each main plot with spacing of 30 cm using 50 kg seed ha-1 and harvested at 12 March. The harvested area of each plot was 4 x 2.5m. The crop was raised following recommended agronomic practices. Plant samples were collected from the field at 40, 60, 80 and 95 days after sowing and at harvest from each plot 5 randomly selected plants were carefully uprooted with the help of a spade so that no nodule was left in the soil. The roots were washed and the nodules from the root system of each plant were separately collected and counted. The nodule materials were first air dried and then oven dried at 650 C for 48 hours. The oven dried weight of nodules was recorded. Experimental data were subjected to the statistical analysis of variance using MSTAT package program and the means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Rhizobium strain BINA L4 and TAL 640 were effective items of nodule formation and plant dry matter production. It could be suggested that farmers might be used either Rhizobium strain BINA L4 or TAL 640 or mixture of both strain as an inoculants during cultivation of BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur- 2 and BARI Masur- 3. However, further study is necessary to draw a definite conclusion.
