Relationship Between Fluoride Soluble Phosphorus and Oxalate Soluble Phosphorus of Soils

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fluoride soluble and oxalate soluble phosphorus do not show much variation from plot to plot. The ratio of the fluoride soluble phosphorus to oxalate soluble phosphorus is remarkably constant in all the three depths, the average ratio being 1.61. It is suggested that the ratio of phosphorus present as Fe- and AI phosphates to the adsorbed phosphorus represent an equilibrium condition and be termed 'chem-ad ratio'. The 'chem-ad' ratio for the soil under study is 0.61 signifying that roughly 1/3 of the added phosphorus is fixed chemically and the remaining 2/3 is fixed adsorptively in this soil.

Objectives:

To determine the relationship between fluoride soluble phosphorus and oxalate soluble phosphorus of soils

Methodology:

In this Present work, the use of NH₄F and oxalate has been critically examined with high fixing soils. Ten soils at three depths (0-6", 6-12" and 12-18" inches) were collected from the Experimental Farm of the Govt. of East Pakistan. The results for oxalate soluble phosphorus and NH₄F soluble phosphorus along with their ratios respectively for 0-6" ,6-12" and 12-18". Ghani and Habibullah showed that the ratio of fluoride soluble phosphorus was fairly constant at all horizons of a profile. The ratio was found to be 2.0,1.3 and 3.6 for cultivated, virgin grass and forest profiles of a red soil. They also showed that in the Brannalt profile of Mattson, the ratio was uniform at all depths having an average value of 0.2 and in the gunnard profile also the ratio was very similar up to 18 inches, having an average value of 0.08. The values of both fluoride soluble and oxalate soluble phosphorus though fluctuate within a narrow range, show the same trend, in variation from plot to plot, as a result of which the ratio of the two values are found to be remarkably similar. The same trend is observable in respect of the soils of the two lower layers.

From these considerations, the average value of the last ratio (which may be termed chem-ad ratio) for the soil under study would come to 0.61. This will indicate that (a) the Fe and AI-phosphates which are formed by chemical combination of soluble phosphorus with the oxides of Fe and Al and (b) the adsorbed phosphorus which is formed by physic-chemical binding of soluble phosphorus with the same materials, are present in a particular type of soil in an equilibrium condition, the equilibrium stage being represented by the above mentioned chem-ad ratio. The equilibrium stage and hence the value of the ratio will vary from soil to soil depending on their content of the active oxides of Fe and Al (may be also Ti and Mn) and their degree of hydration and other characteristics. In this particular case, a ratio of 0.61 will, on this premise mean that for every 100 parts of adsorbed phosphorus, there are 61 parts of chemically bound phosphorus. It may be pointed out that a great deal more of analytical work with soils of different kind and origin would be necessary before the above hypothesis may be put on a firm basis, It is whomever, thought that the line indicated here may lead to useful results.
