Studies on Crop Intensification Through Mungbean and Sunflower Intercropping

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This on-farm experiment was conducted at Jhenaidah Multiplication Testing site, Jessore during two consecutive years (1994 and 1995) to assess possibility of intercropping sunflower with mungbean. Treatments were as follows: T₁ =sole sunflower, T₂=sole mungbean, T₃= I 00% mungbean + 20% sunflower, T₄=100% mungbean+ 40% sunflower and T₅=100% mungbean+ 60% sunflower. The highest mungbean grain equivalent yield (1195 and 709 kg/ha) was obtained from 40% sunflower planting system in 1994 and 1995, respectively. The highest benefit cost ratio over variable cost was also obtained from 20% sunflower planting system though the highest gross margin was found with 40% sunflower intercrop planting system. The results suggest that productivity can be increased for the following main season crop.

Objectives:

To assess the possibility of intercropping sunflower with mungbean and to identify a suitable intercrop combination of these crops.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jhenaidah multilocation testing (MLT) site, Jessore in farmer's field during two consecutive years of 1994 and 1995 under rainfed situation. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 4 replications. Unit plot size was 4m x Sm. The treatments were T₁=sole sunflower, T₂=sole mungbean, T₃=100% mungbean+20% sunflower, T₄=100% mungbean+40% sunflower and T₅=100% mungbean+60% sunflower.

The mungbean variety "Kanti" and sunflower variety "Kironi" were used. A fertilizer dose of I 00-35-36-30-4 kg N-P-K-S-Zn/ha was used for sale sunflower while for sale mungbean and intercropping treatments 20-18-12- 20-4kg of N-P-K-S-Zn/ha were used. All fertilizers except 112 of N for sale sunflower were applied at the time of final land preparation. Rest of 1/2 N was sidedressed at 25 days after planting (DAP) of sunflower. The crop was sown on 15 and 30 October in 1994 and 1995, respectively. After land preparation mungbean seeds was sown (broadcast) on sale and intercrop plots and covered with the soil by laddering. Seeds of sunflower were sown in line on sale and intercropping plots. Row to row distance was 50 cm for all treatments and plant to plant distance was 10 cm for 20% sunflower, 50 cm for 40% sunflower and 33.3 ern for 60% sunflower. One hand weeding was done after 21 days of planting to keep the land free from weeds. Twenty plants from each plot were selected randomly and tagged, the plants were harvested from the central area of the plot which was other than the sampling area. The selected plants were harvested separately at maturity and data on yield components of mungbean and sunflower were collected and recorded. For grain yield, an area of 6 m² was sampled from the center of each plot. The number of plants of 6 m² sample area varied from 12 (for 20% population) to 36 (for 60% population). To find out the advantage of yield in intercropping, land equivalent ratio (LER) and crop performance ratio (CPR) was estimated as proposed by Harris et al. (1987). Gross margin and benefit cost ratio (BCR) were also calculated. In calculating variable cost of labour, ploughing, seed, and fertilizers were considered as cost of the experiment and grain yield as the experimental produce.

Achievement/Findings:

It is, therefore, concluded that sunflower may be intercropped with mungbean for higher productivity as well as for late kharif seed production. Farmers' problems with sunflower seed preservation may be reduced because the seed produced in late kharif cropping can be immediately used for rabi cropping.
