Estimation of Infestation on Different Crops in Hydroponic Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in hydroponic glasshouse and poly-tunnel shade at Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Gazipur during April-September 2014 and October 2014 t0 March 2015 for both summer and winter seasons. In summer (April to September 2014), five crops viz. bitter gourd, Capsicum, summer tomato, green-chili and netted melon was monitored for damage severity by insect pests. In winter (October 2014 to March 2015), five crops viz. bottle gourd, capsicum, tomato, cucumber and strawberry was monitored for damage severity by insect pests. Based on the damage percentage, the infestation percentage was high in netted melon by fruit fly and low in green-chilli by mite in summer. On the other hand, infestation was high in netted melon by fruit fly and low in green-chilli by mite. Rest of the infestation was medium. No crop is beyond infestation even under protective culture. Infestation may reach up to 79.17% if no control measure is taken. Necessary protection should be taken for successful cultivation in hydroponic culture.

Objectives:

To document damage severity of the insect pests in hydroponic culture.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the hydroponic glasshouse and poly-tunnel shade at Horticulture Research Centre of BARI, Gazipur during April-September 2014 and October 2014 to March 2015 both summer and winter seasons. During summer (April to September 2014), five crops viz. bitter gourd, capsicum, summer tomato, green-chilli and netted melon was monitored for damage severity by insect pests. On the other hand, during winter (October 2014 to March 2015), five crops viz. bottle gourd, capsicum, tomato, cucumber and strawberry was monitored for damage severity by insect pests. During monitoring various insect pests attacking different crops were recorded visually through regular monitoring and counting and continued up to the crop harvest. The damage severity by insect pests so far observed was recorded for documentation.

Achievement/Findings:

During study, fruit fly, mealy bug, leaf miner and mite pests were found infesting bitter gourd, capsicum, green-chilli, netted melon and summer tomato. Among the insect pests, fruit fly infested the highest 79.17% in netted melon, 16.18% in bitter gourd. On the other hand, mealy bug infested 16.67% in summer tomato and 13.89% in green-chilli. The infestation caused by mite was recorded 12.50% in capsicum and 5.56% in green-chilli. Leaf miner infestation was recorded only in capsicum which was 16.67%. However, based on the damage percentage, the damage severity was high in netted melon by fruit fly and low in green-chilli by mite. Rest of the damage severity was medium. During study, aphid, fruit fly, leaf miner and mite pests were found infesting capsicum, cucumber, strawberry and tomato crops. From the table it is found that aphid infestation was 17.50% in strawberry, fruit fly infestation was 18.37% in cucumber, leaf miner infestation was 20.83% in capsicum and 14.58% in tomato and mite infestation was recorded 8.33% in capsicum. No infestation was recorded in bottle gourd. However, based on the damage percentage, the damage severity was high in netted melon by fruit fly and low in green-chilli by mite. Rest of the damage severity was medium). From the study it could be concluded that no crop is beyond infestation even under protective culture insect damage may reach up to 79.17% if no control measure taken.
