Effect of Sowing Time and Variety on the Yield and Yield Attributes of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at Farming Systems Research and Development site Palima, Tangail during the kharif-1 season of 1999 and 2000. The purpose of the study was to find out the most suitable sowing time and variety of sesame under rainfed condition in Tangail situation. The treatments included in the experiment were-six time of sowing (5 February, 20 February, 7 March, 22 March, 6 April and 21 April) and thee varieties (T₆, Jamalpur-2 and No.-ll). Yield and yield atributes were significantly affected by sowing dates and varieties. Significantly the highest seed yield (1128 kg/ha) was obtained from 22 March sowing followed by 7 March sowing (1097 kg/ha). Among the varieties, T₆ produced highest yield (1137 kg/ha) but it did not differ significantly from that of Jamalpur-2. Delayed sowing reduced yield by 61-74% compared to 22 March sowing. Sesame variety T₆ performed better if it is seeded in mid-March in Tangail region.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield level of sesame variety under different sowing times with a view to exploring and exploiting the production potential of sesame.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted under rainfed condition during the period from February to August 1999 and 2000 at Farming Systems and Development site Palima, Tangail. The experimental field belongs to Dhamrai Soil Series under the agro-ecological region Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain (AEZ-8). The soil was silty loam and pH ranges from 5.8-6.2. The climate of this area is characterized by relatively high temperature and moderate rainfall in kharif-I. The crop received monthly average maximum and minimum ambient temperature 0°C and rainfall (mm) of 1999 and 2000 during the crop season. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four replications. Unit plot size was 20 m². Six dates of sowing at 15 days interval 5, 20 February, 7, 22 March, 6 and 21 April were assigned in the main plot and three varieties of sesame (T₆, Jamalpur-2 and No.-II) were in the sub-plot. The plots were timely prepared and uniformly fertilized at the rate of 65-60-20 kg/ha of NPKS. Nutrients N, P, K and S were applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. Half of the urea and all other fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. The remaining half of the urea was topdressed before flower initiation (25-30 days after seeding). Seeds were sown by broadcast method at the rate of 8 kg/ha. Two weedings were done, one at 15 days after emergence and another at 25 days after sowing to keep the crop weed free. The crop was harvested at field maturity. Harvested plants were kept in heaps for 3-4 days. Then plants were dried in the sun for few days and then threshed and cleaned. Yield data were measured from 4m x 3m harvest area and expressed as kg/ha, while yield attributes were recorded from the 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. The collected data were analyzed statistically and means were compared by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study indicated that 22 March sowing could be the optimum time and T-6 is a suitable variety for sesame production under rainfed condition at Tangail region.
