Eggplant lines, Performance, Genetic advancement
Variety and Species
The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter of 2013-14. Twelve eggplant lines viz., SM203, SM204A, SM208, SM210A, SM212B, SM212C, SM216, SM220, SM221A, SM221C, SM222A and SM223 were included in the study. The seeds were sown on the seedbed on 20 September, 2013. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on October 19, 2013. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 7.5 x 0.70 m and 10 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 75 cm apart in single row maintaining a row to row distance of 1 m with 30 cm drain. The land was fertilized with cowdung, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc and borax @ 10,000, 375, 150, 250, 100, 12 and 10 kg/ha, respectively. One third of the cow-dung and half of TSP and full of gypsum, zinc and borax were applied during final land preparation. Rest of cow-dung and TSP and 1/3 of MoP were applied as basal in pit. One fifth of urea and MoP were applied after 20 days of transplanting. After that, rest of urea and MoP were applied in equal four installments at 20 days interval. Irrigation, weeding, crop protection measures and other intercultural operations were done following standard practice. Data on days to 50% plant flowering, days to 1st harvest, marketable fruit no./ plant, wt. of marketable fruit/ plant (kg), wt. of infested fruits plant (g), plant height at last harvest (cm), fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), average fruit wt. (g), brinjal fruit and shoot borer (BFSB) infested fruit and yield (t/ha) were recorded from twelve randomly selected plants per entry per replication.
