Study of the Carbohydrate and Protein Content of Rice Plants as Influenced by Magnesium, Aluminium, Phosphorus, Chloride and Sulphate

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Soil sample at depth 0"-6" inches was collected from Bashabo, about five miles east of Dhaka. Soil was airdried, powdered and sieved by 2 mm sieve rejecting stones, gravels, and other undesirable materials. The sulphates of magnesium and aluminium were found to increase the carbohydrate contents in the leaves and stems. But in seeds, sulphate of magnesium did some effects while aluminium sulphate reduced the carbohydrate content. These data demonstrate that though AI2(S04)3 participates in the synthesis of carbohydrate in leaves and stems, it plays hindrance to the translocation of carbohydrate to the grains. The relative effectiveness between the chlorides and sulphates of magnesium and alumininrn are evident from the data. Magnesium chloride in most cases made highest increase in the carbohydrate contents. Super phosphate of lime like the chlorides of magnesium and aluminium increased the carbohydrate content of rice at all stages of growth, thus indicating that phosphate also took part in the formation and synthesis of carbohydrate.

Objectives:

To determine the study of the carbohydrate and protein content of rice plants as influence by Magnesium, Aluminium, Phosphorus, Chloride and Sulphate

Methodology:

Soil sample at depth 0"-6" inches was collected from Bashabo, about five miles east of Dhaka. Soil was airdried, powdered and seived by 2 mm sieve rejecting stones, gravels, and other undesirable materials. The soil was then mechanically and chemically analysed, the data of analysis being shown below: MECHANICAL COMPOSITION OF SOIL (% of air dry soil): Coarse sand = 11.42, Fine sand = 43.72, Silt = 16.23, Clay = 28.17. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF SOIL (% of air dry soil): N = 0.085, P = 0.031, P = 0.021, K = 0.035, Ca = 0.136, Mg = 0.039, Organic matter = 0.91, pH = 5.5. As revealed from the data above, the soil was a sandy clay loam with moderately acidic reaction and contained medium amount of essential nutrient elements. Eight pounds of the processed soil was thoroughly mixed with different doses of chemicals separately. Four rice plants of "Boro" variety as locally known, were grown on these soils in earthen pots in duplicate. All the culture pots were kept in green house with equal light and air. Equal amount of distilled water was added to each pot at 4 days interval to maintain a constant water level on the surface of the soil. Samples of leaves and stems were collected between 8-30 to 9-30 A.M. in the morning at three different stages of growth. Seeds were collected at second and third stages.
