Performance of Rapeseed Varieties at Farmers' Field Under Different Fertilizer Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at B. Baria MLT site during the rabi seasons of 1995-96 and 1996-97 to evaluate the performances of two newly released rapeseed (B. napus) varieties and two mutant lines under two fertilizer management practices. The average of two years' data showed that the highest seed and bio-mass yields were recorded by BARI Sarisha-8 and BINA mutant-1 (43-66-90). The mutant lines had minimum field duration (82 days) followed by BARI Sarisha-8 (85 days). BARI Sarisha-7 had the highest field duration of 89 days. All the varieties performed better under recommended fertilizer management which produced about 40% higher seed yield compared to farmers' practice. The highest seed yield (1662 kg/ha) was obtained from BARI Sarisha-8 with recommended fertilizer management and the lowest yield (859 kg/ha) was observed in BARI Sarisha-7 receiving farmers' practice of fertilizer use.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performances of different rapeseed varieties and mutant lines with different fertilizer management practices at B. Baria.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at B. Baria Multilocation Testing Site (MLT) under the On-Fram Research Division, BARI, Comilla in two consecutive rabi seasons of 1996-97 and 1997-98. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay in texture with pH value of 7.3 under AEZ- 19. The initial nutrient status of the soil was N = 0.13% (L), P= 16.5 µg/g soil (M), K= 0.15 meq/100g soil (L), S = 8.6 µ g/g soil (L) and = B = 0.22 µg/g soil (L). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications. Four rapeseed varieties and mutant lines viz. i) BARI Sarisha-7, ii) BARI Sarisha-8, iii) BINA mutant-1 (43-66-90) and iv) BINA mutant-2 (19-33-90) were used in the experiment. The varieties and mutants were tested under two fertilizer managements viz. (a) recommended fertilizer dose (80-50-40-20-1 kg/ha of NPKSB) and (b) Farmers' dose (70- 40-30 kg/ha) of NPK. Seeds were sown in the first week of November @ 8kg/ ha in 5m x 5m unit plots in 25 em apart lines. Half of urea and other fertilizers were applied as basal and the rest half of urea was top dressed at 25 days after emergence. Weeding and thinning were done in two weeks after emergence. As the field was medium low land, the residual moisture was sufficient to support normal crop growth. The farmers of that area did not irrigate mustard in their traditional cultivation. Data on days to flowering and maturity were recorded. At maturity, 10 randomly selected plants were collected to record the data on yield contributing characters. Yield data were recorded from an area of 4m². All the data were subjected to statistical analysis and the mean values were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The result of two year's experiment revealed that at B. Baria, BARI Sarisha-8 and BINA mutant-1 performed better compared to other varieties under recommended fertilizer management. Higher fertilizer management practices produced higher seed yield.
