Efficacy of Fungicides in Controlling Purple Blotch Disease of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology, Division, BARI during 2013-14 cropping season to find out the effectiveness of 13 fungicides against purple blotch of onion. Out of 13 fungicides the following fungicides MU-Conazole, Crown, Upral 50 WP, Deponil 50 SC, Batol 300 EC anb Iprodazim 50 WP were found effective in controlling purple blotch of onion

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of some fungicides in controlling purple blotch disease of onion under field condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology division, BARI, Gazipur using the seedlings of variety Taherpuri during 2013-2014 cropping season. Fifteen treatments (Fourteen fungicides and one control) were arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.8 x2.1m. The fungicides applications were initiated just after onset of the disease. Four sprays were executed at 10 days interval. Data were taken on disease severity, yield and analyzed statistically. Disease data were recorded according to 0-5 scale, where 0=no diseases, 1=A few spots towards the tips, covering 10% area, 2=several dark purplish brown patches covering more then 25-45% leaf area, 4=long streaks covering more then 45-75% leaf area and / or breaking leaves and 5=completely drying or breaking of the leaves from the base (Rahman, and Rashid. 2008). Data on disease rating were recorded from randomly selected 25 leaves from each plot.

Achievement/Findings:

In case of disease, statistically similar and lower infection were recorded from T₈(13.13) and T₁ (15.0). In T_2,PDI recorded 16.47, which was statistically identical to T_4, T_5,T₆and T_7.Highest PDI (98.23) was found from Control plot (T_15),Length/bulb, weight/bulb, and yield under different treatments varied significantly from one to another but diameter/bulb was nonsignificant. Considering yield, the highest yield was obtained form T₈(4.91 kg) and was statistically similar to T₁, T₂, T₄, T₅, T₆ and T_7.Lowest yield was harvested from untreated control plot (3.50kg). Disease reduction over control ranged from 86. 63-72.72%. Highest reduction recorded in T₈(86.63) followed by T₁ (84.73), T₂₍83.23), T₄(82.87), T₇(82.62), T₅(82.39) and T₆(81.88).

Six fungicides namely MU- Conazole, Crown 75 WP, Upral, Deponil 500 SC and prodazim, Batol 300 EC were highly effective against the disease as well as provided higher yield of onion and may be recommended instead of Rovral to control purple blotch.
