Efficacy of Fungicides in Controlling Stem Gall of Coriander

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra during November 2013 to March 2014 to find out the effectiveness of fungicides in controlling stem gall of coriander. Eight fungicides namely Bavistin, Suncozeb, Sunvit, Cabriotop, Tilt-250 EC, Compenion, Provax, Forum MZ along with control (water spraying) were used. The same fungicide was used as seed treatment, soil drenching and foliar application. The lowest disease infection (0.39%) was recorded from Cabriotop treated plot and the highest disease infection (39.78 %) was recorded from Bavistin treated plot. The highest yield (2.97 t/ha) was recorded in Cabriotop treated plot and the lowest yield (0.95 t/ha) was recorded from Bavistin treated plot.

Objectives:

This study was conducted to find out the efficacy of fungicides in controlling stem gall of coriander

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogra November 2013 to March 2014 to find out the efficacy of fungicides in controlling stem gall of coriander. Seeds of BARI Coriander-1 were sown on 26 November 2013 in 3 m x 2.1 m sized plot with spacing 30 cm x10 cm. The design was RCBD with three (3) replications. The treatments were T₁=Bavistin 50 DF, T₂= Suncozeb 80 WP, T₃= Sunvit 50 WP, T₄= Cabriotop, T₅ = Tilt-250 EC, T₆ =Compenion, T₇= Provax- 200 WP, T₈= Forum-MZ and T₉= Control (No spraying).The soil was clay loam in texture. The same fungicide was used as seed treatment, soil drenching and foliar application for control of stem gall of coriander. Soil drenching (one time) was done before seed sowing and foliar sprays were done within 10 days interval in three times (first foliar spray was done 55 days after seed sowing, second foliar spray was done 65 days after seed sowing and third foliar spray was done 75 days after seed sowing) beginning first appearance of the disease symptom. Data were taken every 10 days after application of fungicides. The land was fertilized with cowdung 5 t/ha and N₇₀P₂₅K₅₀ kg/ha. The entry quantity of cowdung, P and K were applied as basal dose. The N fertilizer was used two split. One half of N was applied at 15 days after emergence and the other half of N was applied just before flowering stage followed by irrigation. Three weeding were done at 15,30 and 45 DAS. Two irrigation were applied 30 and 45 DAS. Data were recorded on number of gall infected plants/plot, number of gall infected branches/plant, disease infection/plot (%), disease severity(%), disease grade(0-5 scale), Plant height (cm), number of primary branches /plant, number of umbel/plant, number of seeds/umbel, weight of seeds/plant(g) and yield(t/ha). Harvesting of the crop was done on 27 March 2014.The collected data were statistically analyzed and the means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with level of significance

Achievement/Findings:

Application of different fungicides had significant effect on number of gall infected plants/plot, number of gall infected branches/plant, disease infection/plot (%), disease severity (%) and disease grade (0-5 scale). The lowest (0.64) number of gall infected plants/plot was found in Cabriotop and the highest (25.39) number of gall infected plants/plot was found in Bavistin treated plot followed by control plot (24.33). The lowest (0.71) number of gall infected branches/plant was found in Cabriotop and the highest (4.94) number of gall infected branches/plant was found in Bavistin treated plot followed by control plot. The highest (39.78%) disease infection/plot was found in Bavistin treated plot and the lowest (0.39%) disease infection was found in Cabriotop treated plot. The disease severity was lowest (0.58%) in Cabriotop treated plot while the highest (33.20%) was found in Bavistin treated plot followed by control. The lowest (1.00) disease grade was found in Cabriotop treated plot and the highest (3.00) was found in control plot. Different fungicides had significant effect on Plant height (cm), number of primary branches /plant, number of umbel/plant, number of seeds/umbel, weight of seeds/plant(g) and yield(t/ha). The maximum number (4.08) of primary branches/plant was found in Cabriotop and the minimum number (3.47) was recorded in control. The highest (100.4 cm) plant height was recorded in Cabriotop treated plot and the lowest (80.69 cm) in control plot. The highest number (83.11) of umbels/plant was found in Cabriotop treated plot and the lowest (44.28) was found in Bavistin treated plot. Highest (52.50)) number of seeds/umbel was recorded in Cabriotop treated plot and the lowest (26.56) was recorded in Suncozeb treated plot. The maximum weight (31.37 g) of seeds/plant was found in Cabriotop and the lowest (11.46 g) was found in control plot. The highest yield (2.97 t/ha) was obtained from Cabriotop treated plot and the lowest yield (0.95 t/ha) was recorded in Bavistin treated plot.Cabriotop gave the best result among the eight fungicides, when they are used as seed treatment, soil drenching and foliar application.

The highest gross return (Tk. 163350 /ha), net returned (Tk. 108463/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.97) was obtained from Cabriotop treated plot. It may be concluded that seed treatment, soil drenching and foliar spray by Cabriotop reduced galling incidence as well as disease severity of coriander and increased the seed yield.
