Study on Dormancy and Seed Quality of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Gazipur during 2010-11 to know the dormancy status and seed quality of wheat. Six varieties of wheat viz., BARI Gom 21, BARI Gom 22, BARI Gom 23, BARI Gom 24, BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 26 were tested at 5 storage periods viz., 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 weeks. Seed germination and vigor index significantly varied with respect to variety, storage period, and interaction between variety and storage period. The highest seed dormancy i.e., lowest seed germination percentage was observed in BARI Gom 24 (72%) which was statistically at par with BARI Gom 23 (74%). The highest seed germination percentage (82%) was observed in BARI Gom 25 and it was statistically similar with BARI Gom 26 (80%). The maximum vigor index was observed in BARI Gom 25 (2.04) which was statistically at par with other wheat varieties except BARI Gom 24 and BARI Gom 22. Storage period greatly influenced the viability of wheat seed during storage. All the wheat verities showed lower (64%) germination percentage immediate after harvest Similarly seeds of all wheat verities gradually increased germination capacity upto 4 weeks during storage. The highest germination percentage (87%) was observed at 4 weeks of storage. After 8 weeks of storage germination percentage reduced to (87-84%) extent. This indicates that wheat seed lot stand to reduce its viability after 2 months at storage.

Objectives:

To know the dormancy status and seed quality of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2010-11. The experiment was laid out in a two factor completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 replications. Six varieties of wheat viz., BARI Gom 21, BARI Gom 22, BARI Gom 23, BARI Gom 24, BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 26 were included in the experiment. Threshed seeds were dried up to around 10% moisture content. Than the seeds were kept in a tin container and stored in a cool room. The germination tests of the stored seeds were conducted weekly up to 4th week. After 4 week germination test were carried out at one month interval. The germination test was carried out in 4 replications of 100 seeds using sand media. Final count was taken at eight day and number of normal seedling alone counted and expressed in percentag. Temperature was 20^oC during the germination period. Seedlings of wheat were dried in an oven at 70⁰C for 72 hours. Vigor index (vi) was computed following the standard method.Recorded data were analyzed statistically with the help of MSTATC program. Seed germination percent data were transformed following Arc-Sine transformation. Treatment means were compared following Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

From the study of this experiment it was proved that the wheat varieties possess initial dormancy. Wheat seed required around 4 week to release the dormancy. So accordingly seed producer should precede to sale their seed after 4 weeks of harvest their crop. After 2 months of storage the seed started to decline their quality.
