Response of Knolkhol to Different Levels of Nutrients

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted to find out an optimum dose of N, P, K and S for yield maximization of knolkhol during the rabi season of 2010-2011 and 2011-12 at Central Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. Treatments comprising four levels of N (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha^-1), P (0, 25, 50, 75 kg ha^-1), K (0, 40, 80, 120 kg ha^-1) and S (0, 10, 20, 30 kg ha^-1) along with a blanket dose of zinc 5 kg, boron 1 kg and cowdung 5 t ha^-1 were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The combined effect of NPKS significantly increased yield and yield attributes of knolkhol. The highest edible stem yield of 25.08 t ha^-1 showing 291% increased over control during 2010- 2011 and of 34.23 t ha^-1 showing 184% increased over control during 2011-2012 was obtained from T₃ (N100P50K80S20 kg ha^-1) treatment. From the regression analysis, it was observed that nitrogen 106.36 kg, phosphorous 57.86 kg, potassium 78.78 kg and sulphur 22.14 kg during 2010-2011 and nitrogen 105.20 kg, phosphorous 53.14 kg, potassium 80.25 kg and sulphur 20.92 kg per hectare during 2011-2012 was found optimum for knolkhol production in Grey Terrace Soil of Gazipur.

Objectives:

To develop a suitable fertilizer package for knolkhol cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted at the field of Soil Science Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2010-11 and 2011-12 with the knolkhol var. 005. The initial soil samples of the experimental fields were collected and analyzed following standard methods. Fourteen treatment combinations comprising four levels of N (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha^-1); four levels of P (0, 25, 50, 75 kg ha^-1); four levels of K (0, 40, 80, 120 kg ha^-1) and four levels of S (0, 10, 20, 30 kg ha^-1) were used. The sources of N, P, K and S were urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum, respectively. A blanket dose of zinc 5 kg, boron 1 kg and cowdung 5 tha^-1 was applied. The whole amount of cowdung, TSP, MoP, gypsum and one third amount of N were incorporated in soil during final land preparation. The rest of the N was applied in two equal installments at 20 and 30 days after transplanting (DAT). Land was prepared by 4-5 ploughing followed by laddering. Transplanting was done on November 25, 2010 and November 15, 2011 in 2.0 m x 2.25 m plots at 45 cm x 30 cm spacing following RCB design with three replications. Flood irrigation was done for two times just after top dressing of urea.The field was intensively kept free from weed. Spraying of bavistin @ 2 g/l H₂O for 2 times was done to kept disease free at 20 and 25 DAT. The edible stem was harvested at 45 and 52 days after transplanting. Data was recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. The yield per plot was recorded and based on that per hectare yield was calculated. The data were analyzed by computer using MSTAT-C Package while the mean separation was done by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Methods of Chemical Analyses Soil pH was measured by a combined glass calomel electrode. Organic carbon was determination by Walkley and Black oxidation method, total N was determined by modified Kjeldahl method, Ca and Mg by KCl extractable method. Phosphorous, Sulphur, potassium, Copper, Iron, Manganese and Zinc were determined by modified Hunter method. Boron was determined by hot water extraction method (Azomethine-H).

It can be concluded that around 105 kg nitrogen, 55 kg phosphorous, 80 kg potassium and 20 kg sulphur per hectare was found optimum for knolkhol production in Grey Terrace Soil of Gazipur.
