Effect of Harvesting Time and Post Harvest Ripening Period on Seed Quality in Bottle Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the farm of Seed Technology Division, BARI, Joydebpur during October 2013-May 2014 to evaluate the quality of bottle gourd seed influenced by harvesting time and post harvest ripening period. Three harvesting stage 70, 90 & 105 days after synthesis and 2 post harvest ripening period (0, 7 days) were tested. Best quality seeds were obtained harvesting at 90 DAA and left for 7 days post harvest ripening period.

Objectives:

To evaluate the quality of bottle gourd seed influenced by harvesting time and post harvest ripening period.

Methodology:

A field experiment was laid out in the farm of seed Technology Division, BARI, Gazipur during rabi 2013-2014 under Randomized block design with three replications. The Variety is BARI lau-4. The unit plot size was 4 x 3m with 4 plants in each plot. Three harvesting stage were followed namely, H₁ (90 days), H₂ (90 days), H₃ (105 days) based on number of days after anthesis (DAA).Fruits were wighed individually and the weight was recorded. The fruit harvested at each stage of harvesting were brought to the laboratory and subjected to 0 and 7 days Post harvest ripening (PHR)period at room temperature. After the completion of stipulated PHR period, the seeds were extracted manually from fruits, cleaned manually. Total number of seed/fruit were recorded and dried in sunlight till it reaches the optimum level of 8 % moisture. Germination test was conducted using sand medium in germination room maintained at 25⁰ c and 100% RH. Final count was taken at fourteenth day and number of normal seedling alone counted and expressed in percentage recommended by ISTA (1996). Vigour index(vi) was computed following the method suggested by Abdul Baki and Anderson(1973).

It is revealed from the discussion of the experimental result that to produce better quality seeds of bottle gourd fruits should be harvested at 90 DAA and left 7 days for post harvest ripening period in terms of 100 seed wt, germination percent, seedling dry wt and vigour index.. It is incomplete result, taking of the data is being continue.Three harvesting stage 70, 90 & 105 days after synthesis and 2 post harvest ripening period (0, 7 days) were tested. Best quality seeds were obtained harvesting at 90 DAA and left for 7 days post harvest ripening period.
